Salsa open diary

So during the pandemic I wasn't really listening to salsa music (other than the Cobeat sets in the beginning) because it would just remind me of not being to dance for a long time.

Now that I am back to dancing, and especially after all the marvelous dancing I did at the Paris parties Sunday and Tuesday (see above :) ), my appetite for salsa music has reopened :) (I always kind of "dance in my head" as I listen to salsa and now I can do that again without the pandemic lack-of-dance sadness)

Currently listening to this awesome Spotify playlist which makes me relive the recent Paris dancing :D https://open.spotify.com/playlist/01apWwHtFlmOziHGUV1foI?si=99e81ef0bc4d48ff

Saw videos of me from the other night. Still an ugly "bounce" on 4 and 8 when I dance. Thought I got rid of it. Still have dangly arm that i thought I got rid of.

Have you tried adding styling to emphasize and make the bounce your own unique flair? Or do something new to replace the bounce?

Still working on dangly arms myself. I am not quite as surprised when I watch myself on video and see little to no improvements. The curse of being your own harshest critic I suppose.

Last night I had what my friend seemed as my best dance ever.
Shd was beyond my level ut everything jived well. I feel like she could sense my shyness and made a point of giving my eye contact and sass. Very few mistakes as a result. My solo is still not great but I masked it with silliness. It helps that I didnt try anything crazy, but just get basic and a Catwalk felt amazing so I didnt feel the need.
Later I found her and told her what my friend said and thanked her again. I hope that translates to more down the line lol.
Butbi also had 2 ho hum dances with someone my friend leads real well. So that tempers my high a bit lol.
But it was over all a good night. Made lots of girls laugh

Seems like I am doing just enough strength and mobility training for my legs, knees and ankles to offset the strain I put them through during a night of dancing. I think I managed to dance around 40 dances last night spread apart over 5 hours. My step counter registered just over 20,000 steps, which is equivalent of traveling about 14km.

Was talking to a friend of mine from Budapest who visited over the weekend. I asked him about the current state of Salsa in Budapest. I was surprised when he said that it's dying. Considering how often I see photos/videos of dancing in Budapest on my social media feeds, I would have assumed Salsa was alive and kicking.

I asked him about a recent event in Budapest where they had invited Panagiotis/Myrto to do workshops. I asked how many people came to the parties.. and he said:

12.

I say again. 12. I was like "what?!!! that's impossible." Out of those 12, half of them were organizers.

Our local party over the weekend had people from France, Prague, Budapest, Vienna and other districts from around the region. It wasn't a big crowd, but it was still worth it for people to drive 2-4 hours to attend.

It makes me appreciate my small dance scene even more, which is apparently doing better than a city with 2 million people.

So... bachata has taken over slasa because its "easier","slower", has more "connection" and is so "romantic".
The obvious solution is a salsa romantics scene.

Lately I have seen a lot of average dancers charge large sums for workshops. I have seen some people charge 40-50 euro for a workshop. If they were pro dancers 40-50 Euros would make sense, but for these people I would say 5 EUR would be a fair price, maybe maximum 10 Euros although I think it would be a stretch.

Also the salsa scene had some weak foundations that made it easier for it to shrink dramatically in a very short space of time. A shame but at least in some places it's still going strong (apparently).

I know teenage/twenty something reggaeton fans who also love Romeo Santos, etc. Apart from Marc Anthony, they wouldn't listen to salsa. Look how many hits Romeo Santos gets on Youtube. Compare it to Tromboranga, which is the type of new salsa that is actually related to the salsa scene.

To be fair though, the Cuban salsa scene is still packing people in. In my experience, many dancers on the Cuban scene actually prefer dancing to PR and S American salsa (who can blame them). But it's certainly not enough of a priority for them to go where that music is played.

True, but from what I have understood they rarely even play Romeo Santos in many European bachata scenes? I think @Chris_Yannick has pointed it out for example that they play more bachata remixes than Romeo Santos.

I am one of those who prefer salsa dura. La Maxima 79 is played quite often on the weekly event I go to and it's always gets the dance floor packed. In the last event they also played a Salsaton, which cleared the dancefloor quite fast.

Actually during the summer half of the bachata played at the socials I went to were Dominican. Not sure why, but now it seems to have reversed back to lots of shitty remixes.

I heard Romeo Santos a lot up until 2014/15 then it was remix city.

In England I think he gets rinsed at bachata events and salsa events that also play bachata. If events play a lot of bachata remixes it's probably for commercial reasons, in which case playing R Santos also makes sense.
