Salsa music you do not like! Aka true confessions

I think it's unfair to put Show me in with the rest. Aside from R'n'B Latino, Alex Wilson has offered up well orchestrated, very musical tracks. He particularly is a very very talented musician, and the people he works with reflect this.

So ghastly this is not.

Couldn't agree more. Whilst I probably would play most of his stuff at a gig, I listen to it at home/in the car all the time. He's had some brilliant vocalist with him especially.

Montuno Street
Lady
Pink Panther
Micaela
La Vida Es un Canival
Aicha

On and on over and over, forever.

What hacks me off about Montuno street getting sooooo over played is it's not the best track on the album and DJ's hardly ever get past Montuno!

+10!

Never heard a single track of hers that I like, never understood what all the fuss about her was.

Check out some of recordings with Johnny Pacheco, if you haven't already. There are some gems to be found from that era together with the stuff she did with Ray Barretto and Willie Colon, IMHO.

+1. Also some really good Celia Cruz tunes from the mambo era.

You both seem to be saying that Show Me can't be that bad, because AW has recorded tracks you regard highly, and he and his band are superb musicians.

One does not need to be Vulcan to spot the flaw in your logic.

I just discover i dont like AW songs..never had heard but after this discussion i went to two album I have here ans listen to all songs..hate it..

The only ones I could listen till the end were the chacha donde carmela and teh salsa sabroson..the rest is too pop/ regatton for my taste..

Whatnsong is the plagio , aint nobody ou delilah - go ? cause the beginning is the same

Although I despise "La vida es un carnaval" and "La negra tiene tumbao," and other songs that her labels pushed, I do love a lot of her work; including tracks with Johnny Pacheco, La Sonora Ponceña and from some of her classic solo albums.

True, I forgot about Celia Cruz's recording with La Ponceña - La Ceiba. Well recommended for those who are into real salsa.

Yeah, you have to get away from old celia + cynical record execs.

Try a "fruity hat" style record: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Htmcsi48Jw&feature=relmfu

Or giving Shirley Bassey a run for her money: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp_lBZvOh70&feature=related

For her fans, what most of us like is her unique & strong voice, combined with a lot of passion.

Here's one of my favorite clips of Celia Cruz, showing her great energy onstage:

"Toro Mata" live:

She doesn't move around much in the following clip (because of the big dress plus she's older), but her voice is still rich and strong in this tremendous song with Tito Puente:

"Celia y Tito" live:

(P.S. -- I'll confess that I don't really like her classic hit "Quimbara" because it's just too fast to enjoy dancing to it. )

I have ~100+ tracks of Celia. I like many of them especially from her early Cuban and her classic era from the 1940s to 1960. The later songs in the late 60s and 70s are more typical of the genre at the time so not as interesting to me. I am glad I was able to see her live on one of her last tours.

Still amazing that she stayed current over so many decades. There are/were so few artists that lasted as long and were as talented as she was.

I often listen to songs of hers like Caramelo or Guede Zaina when I am at work or other places when I can't dance and the sound works for me.

Not all songs from Celia Cruz can't be count as classics, but a bunch of them really shines from the rest:

La Sopita En Botella (1957-Sonora Matancera): I've listened dozens of versions but this one is the best. Sonora and Celia in their peak with an impeccable sonority.

Gracia Divina (1972-Harlow): Celia was semi-retired, living in Mexico when Larry Harlow approached her to record this song. The now legendary "Hommy" project and this single song marked a definitive re-launch of her career. After this, her LP with Johnny Pacheco and her live performances with Fania All Stars assured her permanent pass in the Fania Kingdom.

Tengo El Idde, Yerbero Moderno, Toro Mata, Químbara, Reina Rumba, Besitos De Coco, Ritmo Tambor y Flores, Lo Tuyo Es Mental, El Guavá...: some of the hits with Johnny Pacheco. I've never seen Químbara as a danceable song (yep, too fast!) but it made a great impact when released because people loved the traba-lengua (tongue twister) inserted in the coro. Have you ever tried to sing "Quimbaracumbara Cumbaquinbambá" as fast as the coro does? ;)

Bemba Colorá, Isadora & Cucala (Fania All Stars).

Dos Jueyes, Usted Abusó, Yo Si Soy Veneno, Zambúllete, A Papá, Tu y Las Nubes (Willie Colón).

Nadie Se Salva De La Rumba, La Dicha Mía, Soy Antillana, Encantado De La Vida, Sonaremo' El Tambor, Tatalibabá, La Ceiba y La Siguaraya... (with Pete "Conde" Rodriguez, Sonora Ponceña, Tito Puente and Ray Barretto.)

I love Celia's voice and sabor but most of the music she sang doesn't really do it for me.

However when she is in the right musical context she kicks it as in this example with the Alegre All Stars (Charlie Palmieri/Kako etc...):

I wasn't hatin on Celia Cruz BTW, just saying I hate that song la Vida su Carnaval, that's all. ;) A lot of her discography rocks so hard that it's insane.

It's the only one some DJ's know.
I have never danced to this track of hers 'Dos Jueyes', I think it's great. If I know it there is no excuse because I'm no salsa buff.

Yet another tune I find completely uninspiring, that is considered an essential part of the night for many UK salsa dancers: Massimo Scalici Fragile. What is this fascination with hearing the same crap over and over and over?

Do salsa events in other countries play this tune every night, year in year out?
