Salsa in Nicaragua

Hello,

I will be in Nicaragua for about a week and a half next month for work, and am hoping to unwind a little on the weekend with some dancing (aside from other activities- beaches, volcanoes, churches etc). I will be primarily in Leon; I've searched the previous posts, but didn't find too much information. Mostly it seemed that folks were saying it was uncommon for a woman to go out alone (though perhaps I will be with some colleagues), and that it tends to be people going out as couples.

Is there anybody who spent some time in the area that has some thoughts or suggestions?

I have gone out dancing as a woman alone in Leon, and even gone up and invited local men to dance. Sure it was unusual for them, but they certainly didn't mind! :) Note though I have spent a lot of time independently travelling, mostly in less developed countries, and little fazes me.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a great deal of salsa, with, as you say, most people going to the clubs in couples and the clubs giving them the slow popular songs they desired to 'dance' to. I did have a wonderful dance with a young man when a salsa came on, who had a few simple steps in his repetoire, but delivered them which such enthusiasm, musicality and 'sabor' that the dance was a true pleasure. Suddenly, the whole dance floor had stopped and was watching us!

I'm afraid I was there some time ago and can't comment on which clubs to go to, but just asking around I was able to get recommendations (I speak fairly good Spanish). Leon (and Ometepe - I'm a hiker!) was definitely my favorite place in Nicaragua - it really belonged to the locals and is rich in history, whereas Granada was crawling with tourists just there to drink and party.

!Que tengas un buen viaje!
