Salsa in Italy? (Rome, Venice & Florence)

It looks like Pedro Gomez is still teaching in Rome: http://www.pedrogomez.it. He used to teach in Germany in the 1990s and he was a great dancer already then. He was born in Cuba but grew up in Puerto Rico, and dances and teaches PR style. He then moved to Rome and founded his own dance school there.

If you are looking for PR style places, I would call him (or his staff) and ask where the PR style dancers go out in Rome. He definitely knows. When we were in Rome in 1998, we learned that the PR style clubs were outside of Rome. Since we did not have a car in Rome, we decided to look for something more nearby in the city but it was a club like you describe them here: all kinds of dancers and styles but nothing sophisticated and certainly no PR style.

I hope this will help somebody.

Everything seems outside centre sophisticated or not...!

Saturday: Palacavicchi

Jeez, I don't know who on this forum has been to this place but it is quite something - absolutely HUGE. They had five dance floors and I reckon 5000 people. Dancers I was with had never seen so many salsa dancers in one place even at congresses... Place is way out of Rome and accessible only by car. About 30-40 mins drive from centre. Best to post or contact people on couchsurfers or similar site to find someone with car..

Music again Cuban in main rooms, with some bachata. To dance bachata with Italian girls you ideally need to know them or have danced a bit of salsa already. They are very picky and take it quite seriously!

Salsa in Florence is pretty non-existent. At least in the week and in/near centre. Jaragua is closed and a lot of the other places listed have either changed hands or closed (Bello Latina, Palace, Oblivion, etc). On Friday or Saturday there are a number of choices - check the lists. Probably best to call or check recent reviews otherwise you may find nothing when you arrive! Also, in the summer a lot of club nights move to the seaside... As at Feb 2012.

Just bumping to see any updates for the cities mentioned.

I would like to add Sorrento to this list please. I found the Jamaica Inn but not sure how to get there from the Centre and how safe is it to travel at night.

hi there. i will be in Pisa in a few days and wonder if there is anywhere that i can salsa, bachata??

Hi, I saw your PM. I don´t have any info on Pisa and my Italy trip was a few years ago so sorry I can´t help. Italian salsa sets don´t have much on the web so google searches don´t yield much, have you checked facebook ?
I found out about salsa in one city based on a promoter´s post from another city posting their event. So if you find a couple of Italian salsa fb pages there may be posts of events in Pisa. Good luck.

bump! :)

i'm in Venice til at least the end of september, staying in the historic centre. ive found online info for a club in mestre, but does anyone know of anywhere on the sistiere, please?

thanks :)

PS: if anyone goes to palacavicchi in rome with friends, dont expect to find them again during the night or at the end...when the phone networks can get jammed by sheer numbers. good idea to arrange in advance where to meet at the end. :)

Hola salseros... I am visiing Rome next week and chanced upon this interesting chat.... I am looking for a place to salsa on thursday and it seems Zanussi is my only choice given its distance ?

Zanussi is quite close to the subway. Mostly Cuban dancers but mixed music.. You will need to take a taxi back as the trains stop running after midnight.

Bumping this one to see if there is any new information...I've got a friend who will be in Rome next wednesday-saturday.
Zanussi on thursdays
Carusco on fridays

This is great information. Thanks so much. I'm going to Florence only. And, I'm more for partner dancing and not line. That's interesting regarding the preferred language if your Italian is not very good. I thought Spanish would be a good option. But you say English is better (unless when speaking to a Cuban). Interesting. Thanks.

Sept 2015... any salsa or bachata in Florence? I tried reading a number of sites and they are pretty hard to decipher. Seems like there's some schools but the events do not have any obvious web presence...

Yes, I would try to use FaceBook as much as possible if I was in Italy. The websites are mostly rubbish and out of date. All over nowadays people are posting their latest events on FaceBook.

Is anyone able to provide an update for Rome, Florence and Venice (and also Athens!)? There's a teeny, weeny, tiny chance I would have some free time to dance when I'm there in late September. Probably not, but I always keep up a sliver of hope when salsa is involved, and have a pair of dancing shoes buried in the backpack. Venues would need to be near the central station (except in Venice where we'll be on the Lido) and not start late. I dance on1.

Wife and I dance and we honeymooned in Italy and Croatia. We did Florence, Venice and Rome and while dancing wasn't at the top of our list, I did a cursory search of socials and Florence and Venice barely had anything - I don't think you'll find much there. Rome had socials, obvi, but we didn't have the time to pursue them.

Thanks for the response :) Yes, I thought Rome and Athens would probably be the best bet; I'll see what I can dig up...

To echo earlier in the thread, definitely search for Pedro Gomez. When we were in Rome I actually spoke to him OTP - couldn't have been a nicer guy. Told me the scene was more Timba-ish while we were there but I would def search his site.

I'll be going to Pisa in September. I tried to do a google search but couldn't find much. Is there any suggestions for Cuban salsa places in Pisa?
