Plena 79 Salsa Orchestra Featuring Alain Pérez. A medley performing La Habana me llama/Marcando la distancia
I love how they sound! The Cuban singer Alain Pérez is well known, but Orquesta Plena 79 not so much, so I wanted to share them! They are a salsa orchestra from Valencia, Spain. Founded in 2016 by percussionist and composer Carlos Llidó and multi-instrumentalist, arranger, and producer Carlos Martín, they’ve become known for their fusion of traditional salsa with jazz and funk, and of course, their focus on the plena genre.
So far they’ve released two albums, "Tierra y Libertad" (2022) and "Baila Conmigo" (2019). They were also nominated for a Latin Grammy Award for Best Salsa Album, in 2023. This made them the first Spanish orchestra ever to be nominated for a Latin Grammy in this category. They have received other awards and nominations in their career.
The lyrics of their songs usually touch on social awareness and encourage peace and freedom. This is an extract from one of their songs, “Tierra y Libertad” (Land & freedom), which names the album.
“Algún día en el mundo / Se alzarán nuevas tierras
Donde no existan las guerras / Y el amor sea fecundo”
Algún día en este mundo reinará la libertad”
"Someday in the world / New lands will rise
Where there will be no wars / And love will be fruitful
Someday in this world, freedom will reign"
I really recommend listening to their albums! Particularly this last one.
