Salsa-deprived unite

So, last night we attempted the 2nd salsa night here. It's been four weeks since our last try because the only person who knows how to lead was out of town.

To start: it was great fun and I enjoyed sharing the dancing, the music and the fun with my friends.

But still so much to work on!

The Location: we found a place closer to the city for our last night's event. They have an upper level room that we could use. It has a wooden floor + aircon. I really liked it except the floor was sticky because it was not clean.
Some of our friends will open a cafe in the next few weeks and they offered us a "permanent" home for our event, as soon as they are open - exciting!

The music: I tried to put a "beginner-friendly" playlist together but will still have to work on that. Of course we are still far from DJ'ing, so playlists will have to do for the time being. They liked most of the music, but many songs that I consider "moderate danceable speed" turned out still too fast for first-timers. So any tips for slow/danceable/"easy" (for lack of a better word) music for people who do their very first salsa steps in their lives is greatly appreciated!

The attendance: Currently we exclusively spread the word through Facebook, Couchsurfing (our organizing group is part of the local CS group, which is very active) and word of mouth - FB is our best friend here. We have been announcing the event almost daily to all our friends and networks, created a fb event, and raved about how much fun this FREE event is going to be (people love freebies around here). We even got some plugs from some of my Salsa Manila friends. However, much fewer people showed up as expected: we invited over 350 people through our FB event, out of which we got 18 "attending" + 23 "maybe" but in the end only 8 people showed up (4 of those being the organizers).
Haha, on the upside, that's 2 people more than last time :)

But we keep on trying! I really, really do wish that we get a little salsa scene going around here.

I'll keep you posted on how it evolves :)

Here is some songs I would consider.

Lalo Rodriguez - Devórame otra vez
Ray Barreto - Acid
Joe Pastrana - Rumbon Melon
Calle Real - Ya Lo Se
Fruko y Su Tesos - El Preso
Oscar d'Leon - Lloraras
Grupo Niche - Sin Sentimentos
Polo Montanez - Un monton de Estrellas
Gilberto Santa Rosa - Perdoname
Willie Rosario – La Bomba
Charlie Palmieri – Tiene Sabor
Fania All-Stars – Bamboleo
Joe Arroyo - Yamulemau

In my opinion even though beginners have trouble with rhythm it is good to play salsa which has different tempos and from different genres. At least I do not like nights where music is very one sided.

Thanks Petteri!

I did use Devorame otra vez and Un monton de Estrellas last night.
Now I have some more to add for next time :)

Also for absolute noobs, stress that not everything is partnerwork. Side-stepping is perfectly managable on faster tunes and might provided the initial impetus of fun and a rewarding experience to bring people back

3rd salsa night in my city :)

Haha, this salsa night unexpectedly turned into a movie set. One of the regular participants (we call everyone a regular who has showed up more than once ;) ) is helping out some friends with an independent movie. They shot a scene at our salsa night. I wonder how this will look like in the movie. The scene was about a guy snatching a girl from another guy, they dance together, he hits on her during the dance and in the end they leave together arm in arm. Almost everybody involved in the scene had 0-3 nights salsa experience, and I was a beginner again because I tried out leading since we were short of leaders, so the whole thing must look pretty funny. On the upside, some of the movie crew said they wanted to come back next week to try out dancing. We asked them if we could use some of the scene to promote our salsa night and they said yes, so we're getting some footage.

To all leaders in this world: :notworthy: kudos, kudos, kudos for sticking in there and not giving up after the first few frustrating tries! Oh my god, I found leading soooo difficult and confusing. I thought it was going to be difficult, that's why until now I never really tried it, but actually doing it, it was even more confusing than I had imagined!! :notworthy:

To sum up: night 3 was a "different" night. Apart from the organizing team (4 people) we have 3 regulars now, 2 new first-timers showed up following our fb invitation, we "recruited" 3 more off the street, and we may get some more first-timers out of the film crew. - Good night, I would say, even though it didn't involve terribly much dancing.

Ooops, this thread is turning into a "My starting-a-salsa-scene-Blog"-Thread, sorry ;) I'm just sooo excited to talk about what's going on here. ;)

Really cool! Maybe you could create such blog-thread, seed with some posts form here, since no doubt I'm not the only one excited. :)
[and we'll hijack it]

Personally I have no problem with it - it is still on topic and I'm sure we all want to know how things are going. Brings a positive spin to the thread :D

Yes first outings for leaders are a very steep learning curve. As a follow you've already got the timing sorted so once you've got your head around switching the feet you should find it gets easier quickly.

And of course we're happy to share in your news :D

For some reason I totally loose my timing as soon as I have to switch the footwork, actively do something with my hands/arms/rest of my body that makes sense to a follower and think about what to do next.

Hehe, I'll keep on blogging ;)

Thanks everyone for your support!! I somehow feel I'm starting this salsa scene together with all of you supporters, which is such a huge help :)

It's been a while since I last updated the salsa-evolution in my city...well, it had a short life :(
Our organizing team somehow dissolved, with one not available on weekdays anymore and me and the experienced leader out of town, so that we could not hold our salsa nights for the past four weeks.
This week however, I received an offer from a visiting salsa friend to give a bachata workshop. So I asked around among my friends, the former salsa-night participants, couchsurfing (since the original salsa night started in cs) but I received 0 interest, not even one lame 'like' on Facebook. Maybe the few people were not ready for bachata yet, maybe a salsa workshop would have spurred more interest, who knows. Anyways, I will be traveling till the end of the month and maybe after that I'll start a new attempt. But for now, no more salsa in my city.

I would like to join you !
My last two weeks were not so good salsa-wise. I think the frustration of expecting salsa and not getting salsa was the hard part. If I wasn't expecting salsa, no problem, but I was.

Part 1 : Cannes Salsa Festival.
Now this is supposed to be some kind of congress.
Day 1 Cannes Beach. Yes, on the beach. How stupid can you get ? If you put a wooden floor in the middle of sand, it's going to get full of sand ... Highlights : lights in the face, couldn't even see my partner. Crappy concert, then performances, followed by not so good music. There was ONE follower would could actually keep the beat properly. All the others were just running and didn't seem to know there was a "slow" on 4 and 8. One "OK" dance with one follower, ruined by the lights (couldn't see her half of the time) and the sandy floor (I had to limit my moveset a lot because of the slipping issues). She only spoke Italian so I couldn't talk to her after. Quickly after, they proceeded to drop some alcohol on the sound system, so it broke down pretty early.
Day 2 : I was a bit tired so I didn't attend the workshops. The party was at "Palais des Festivals". Plastic floor. Not fantastic but OK. Expect there were super long performances, followed by a Habana D'Primera concert. Sure, they make good music, but for some reason they play 15++ minutes long songs instead of the original 4 min. Painful. No dance. It finished at 1pm. I got no satisfying dance. I even invited a couple of the performers, but they had arm tension, timing, and frame issues, not to mention the overstyling that messed up the lead even more.
Day 3 : on the beach again. How stupid can you get ? I was so annoyed I didn't go to it or to any workshop either, I just stayed with my friends at Nice (close to Cannes)

This was the worse congress ever. They only featured two hours of possible social dancing (kind of OK floor, danceable music, ability to see partner ...) and there were no proper followers I could dance with (the only ones who seemed kind of OK actually refused the dance, with a "I don't know you" attitude). Damn, I'll never go there again.

On my way back to Paris yesterday, I stopped at Lyon. It is the second biggest city in France so I expected a bit of a salsa scene. I managed to get in touch with a local DJ, who told me the slot style dancers were all going to one club on Thursdays. I went there, and the doorman told me no sorry there is no salsa today, it's only on Tuesday and Wednesday. I then proceeded to go to the two other places that were supposed to host a salsa night. It was 90% merengue reggeaton with a bit of bachata, and there were about ten followers. When the salsa came up, I couldn't do much with the two of them who didn't accepted to dance with me. It was cuban and I went pretty easy on them. But what can I do with a follower who messes up enchufela->exibela->dilequeno ?
I asked the DJ what was the deal, and he told me that if you weren't local, nobody would dance with you, and that the only "real" salsa night was on monday anyway. As***hole ! Why would he tell me there are some salsa nights if there aren't ?

anyway, back to Paris tonight, I'll go get my fix ! There are no good slot style event on Fridays (salsounds70 is off until the end of the summer), but cuban will be OK : the followers can follow and the DJ plays salsa !

No salsa for two weeks is completely OK, but attempting five times and getting none is painful !

Jolinia, sorry to hear things are not going so well but I hope it's just a temporary setback. Who knows, maybe when you are back people will have missed salsa and will be happy to try again. In the meantime I hope you get some dancing during your trips :D

tresto, this sounds painful indeed - let me strike off this one from my congress list. Is it something widespread in France that the followers will not dance with you if they don't know you?

Let me bring a tiny bit of optimism to the thread. Things here have improved a little, maybe not for long but it's certainly better than nothing. I decided to ask if there are people who would be interested in salsa practice sessions where we can dance or learn new things - anything we want to work on. I was secretly hoping that 1 or 2 girls will be interested and I can practice my leading on them :P Hey, in this follower-heavy part of the world it's not unrealistic to expect only girls to show up.

Surprisingly I got replies from several people including the guy with whom we wanted to start lessons (but didn't because he is not around often enough). Well, he is around for part of the summer, so he wanted to join. Great! 5 people were too much to gather at home so we found a dance hall we could rent cheaply and split the costs for the rent.

To my amazement 10 people showed up - 5 guys and 5 girls (so, no leading for me :P) We did a bit of everything - shines, a new turn pattern, a bit of lady styling and lots of dancing. Everybody seemed happy, so, we scheduled a second session where 8 people showed up and now we have another one scheduled for next week.

Today I met my dancer colleague in the corridor and he said: "I hear you are a very good teacher!" Yes, here everybody knows everybody and gossip goes around quickly :P

Sorry I have to leave the salsa deprived group, I'm back in Paris and I had an incredible time dancing at "moving de Thiais". I was a little bit "off" at first, but I quickly go the feeling back, and I even had lots of positive comments on my leading, musicality and I was invited to dance by lots of very hot French women !
It was soooo relaxing to be able to lead just about anything effortlessly. Except for a couple who were beginners, all of the women there knew about timing, proper arm tension, frame, positioning, spinning, stability, floorcraft, and most of them even did some very nice styling and musicality stuff.
And even the beginners were OK anyway. Sure they had some technical flaws that made the leading a bit tiring (lots of adjustments, timing reset, repositioning, extra strong frame so they can hold on when they slightly lose balance, as with all beginners), but they had a positive attitude and they weren't heavy (follows who pull on the connection annoy me), didn't backlead, use their thumbs to hold on, or other dance ruining things.

These were good times !
I hope you all get your fix at some point, and hopefully often !
Cheers !

Geez, gotta say dances are easily ruined for you. Try to relax already!
