Relatively New Salsa Dancer Coming to San Fran

Hey guys I am not sure if i am breaking any forum rules by doing this, thus the first post, I am a guy from singapore coming to San Fran and L A for a holiday with my family really. Young man leeching of the parents haha. anyway i was wondering, I dance on1 and i have only danced since last year sept. Any tips on how to to not screw myself up there? another thing is I dont mind making new friends and learning really. Thanks and sorry if i disturbed the rules here.

Welcome to SF, badrul85!

You've not disturbed any rules, but not necessarily picked the best section of the forum for your posting. Normally questions like yours belong rather to the 'Just Dance' Section, so I hope a fellow mod is going to move this one.

As to your question, I think some of our members will be able to point you to the best locations in LA and SF as well as might be interested to meet you for dancing. Regarding tips on 'how to not screw' yourself up, I suggest to talk a look at some of the threads referenced in the Oldies but Goodies. Also you might want to reread some of the 'old' threads in the 'Just Dance Section' of the forum, where you can find a lot of tips.

No, as pr can simply move this thread into the other section of the forum. But he either seems to have overlooked my suggestion or has some good reason to ignore it. :)

Noobster and I have posted our opinions on good palces to go in San Francisco. If you want details, enter "San Franicsco" in the search field to bring up all the threads. When are you coming? My favorite place is Cafe Cocomo http://cafecocomo.com on Saturdays and Thrusdays. Roccapulco is another large salsa club. There is also Glass Kat (Tuesdays, I think) in the city, Down Low in Berkley (Fridays? ask noobster). If you go dancing on a Saturday, I can meet you at Cocomo.

:P Welcome to LA Badrule! :P

You will find me @ Mama Juana's (near Universal Studios) on Saturdays and the Granada (in the city of Alhambra) on Fridays. I'm a guy but I could always introduce you to or point to you some of the friendly people that I dance with.

I wish I was the one traveling to Singapore. :)

Sorry, sometimes I'm in a hurry and don't read that carefully... Moved it now... :)

Downlow is on Wednesdays (10pm-2am). There is also Allegro on Sunday evenings in Emeryville, which is very frequented both by slot style and Cuban dancers.

wow okok thanks guys i will be in San Fran on the 5th of june till the 9th as for LA my dad is rather shy with the info but i will take all of your advice really. I just really want to check out salsa scene other than singapore's.

guys is the pleasant hill BART station area anywhere close to cafe cocomo? cause i just got info that i be staying in the area. also for LA i will be staying in wilshire plaza hotel, any clubs close by?

Glas Kat tonight in SF or cafe cocomo on thursday would be the top places to go to actually see the top dancers in the area. However, if you're unmobile in the east bay then go to Down Low Lounge On Wednesday, very Bart accessible I believe and a good scene though the dance floor is sticky. On thursday if you're stuck and just want to hear salsa music you can go to a new club in concord called Sazon, but don't expect to dance with female salseras as the concord, pleasant hill area is filled with cumbia dancers, but I'll be there hopefully with one or two followers. There are alot of places that you could go on friday that would be be fine.

FYI, these suggestions are based on you being over 21

Cocomo is not really accessible by BART and the biggest problem is to come back from there as the last bart leaves about at 12:20, but you would need to take either bus or cab to get there from cocomo. None of them is very reliable. (Dancing typically starts after 10pm)

Maybe the most accessible place in the weekend is Allegro (Sunday)
which is in emeryville. You will have to get off at MacArthur and take a bus.
You will have to take bus (or cab) to back, but at least dancing
starts at 8, so you will have a plenty of time to spend there. (And you don't even need to over 21 to enter)

Looking at the calendar at http://www.salsacrazy.com/cgi-bin/calendar.cgi
also shows:

http://www.salsacrazy.com/cgi-bin/c...&view=Event&datestring=20080607&event_id=6967
for Saturday at Lake Merritt Dance Center, 200 Grand Ave. I've never been there, but it is close to the bart station.

Cocomo is not easily accessible via public transport. You can take the BART and get down at the 16th street (or is it 17th street) station in the mission. From there it is best to take a cab (there might be a local bus service, I am not sure). From 16th Street BART station, Cafe Cocomo is probably about 3-4 miles.

The problem is that the BART stops around midnight. There could be someone who is coming from that area and willing to carpool. I can't recall anyone from top of my head. But if you post your request on the local salsa sites you just might get lucky. On Sunday you can go to Jellys in the afternoon where they will have live band and dancing starting around 5.30pm. And you can go from Jellys to Allegro for dancing in the night.
