Recommended friendly places to dance in LA for the next week

Hi All,

Long time, no see!

I've just touched down in LA (I'm here until next Monday), and I'm after some recommendations on good salsa clubs to check out as and when I have 5 minutes to myself!

I want somewhere that's going to have good dancers, but most importantly is fun with a good atmosphere and isn't too cliquey. If possible I'm after somewhere I can dance on 1 as opposed to on 2, but I'm not overley fussy on that, and I'm happy with either cuban or LA style. Mainly after somewhere which will be friendly to a non-local girl where I can have a few good dances to some great music.

Any recommendations / suggestions would be fab!

Thanks!

Hiya Claire!

It's a shame you're not staying through Tuesday, as there's a Monday night spot called Sachi that would suit your request perfectly!!! One of the few places I make the trek to because I like the people.

Most other places I would go to because of my expected dance fix level. My recommends are:
Wednesday - Cohiba
Thursday - Mama Juanas
Friday - Granada
Saturday - Mayan since it's competition time
Sunday - Rio or Steven's

The only spot I'm for sure making a go at is the Monday night thing. Gotta rest my weary purse strings. *sigh*

Hi there,
I love dancing in L.A. I have gone on my own to both Mama Juana's and Steven's. I liked them both but I preferred Mama Juana's because they had a live band, Johnny Pacheco and they were fabulous. I also liked the smaller, more intimate size of the club, over Steven's. At Mama Juana's there are generally way more men than woman, so that's been great for me plus I was totally comfortable there. All dance On1, virtually no one dances On2. Have fun!

Yes, I also liked Mama Juanas, though it was despite the fact that there were way more men than women. :x Actually, that was true on Thursday, while Tuesday was more even. I also thought it was great that the $10 cover included a real lesson (Alex de Silva on Thursday), along with the live band and free ice-water.

Hey all,

Thanks for the recommendations - sounds like Mamas might be the place to go on Thursday (hoping I've no work commitments now!) - might give Cohibas a go tonight - will see how I feel.

Thanks again,

May see some of you there! (If you see a lost looking british blonde, feel free to say hi!)

Darn! Wish I could be there. Why not come up the coast a little ways and visit Portland?

She forgot to mention pretty... though perhaps not in LA way... or maybe...

I'll shut up now before I get into trouble...

 Starting to wonder if SF could do with its very own flirting-specific thread, much the way DF has one!

Definitely not LA style in anything except my salsa...!

And unfortunately I'm here on business, so can't travel out at all - otherwise I'd have hit SF - would love to go dancing there...

Claire did you make it out last night? My friend decided to have a last minute early bday celebration so I ended up at MJs afterall. Way too crowded. But the band rocked. Got a coupla good dances. And Prince made one of his casual appearances.

You mean Prince, as in the musician formerly known as Prince, who's now Prince again, and who they like to parody on SNL? He's a salsa dancer?

Don't know that he dances, but he's known to stop by this venue every blue moon or so to enjoy the entertainment.

:(

Nope...

Unfortunately my two weeks in the Indian sun did absolutely nothing to prepare me for LA and I got royally scorched yesterday when blading down Santa Monica (I have THE most ludicrous tan lines in the world thanks to a bag strap across my chest, an unusually cut top and elbow and wrist guards...) and I have parts of my body which symbolise a lobster - unfortunately this totally wiped me out last night which I was utterly gutted about as I was really looking forward to a boogie!!

I'm being hijacked tonight and tomorrrow but I don't care what it takes - Sunday is mine and I'm dancing even if it's by myself on the sea front!! Any good suggestions for Sunday would be great!

Sorry I missed you! :(

Steven's Steakhouse is great on Sundays.
$10 Salsa class from 3pm-5pm (free buffet after the class)
Salsa dancing from 5pm-2am

Hi All,

Just wanted to say thanks for all the help and advice - I hit Casa Escobar tonight (mainly due to location!) and it was a fun evening - good crowd, good variety of dancers, friendly people and the music was good too.

Sad to be going home tomorrow - will definitely be back and will definitely try out some more venues next time too!

Thanks again,

Claire
