Recommendation for a footwork DVD

In my intermediate class, we occassionaly touch on footwork, for example "diamond step" or "hook step". But it is done very quickly and it takes me forever to get up to speed with a couple of minutes of demo.

Are there any DVD's out there that you guys would recommend that really focus on footwork? I guess this also covers shines to some extent, but I am looking for footwork that I can do in partner dancing.

By the way, stupid question, can anyone describe to me how to perform "susieQ"? I am looking for the steps...

Not a stupid question at all. Check here :arrow: salsamoves.tripod.com for a demo of that move. :) As for DVDs, anything in Member Review section that might help, Dickda1?

Ah Peach, truely you are the mistress of the pattern. I looked everywhere for the suzy Q steps. Thanks for the great link!

I searched for salsa footwork DVD's both on this forum and the Dance Forums without success. I see them advertised, but I would like an opinion...

Hmm...Okay. Unfortunately, I don't have any that really focus on footwork so I can't make any recommendations. Does anyone know if the Juan & Diana beginner video or any other video that breaks down the footwork, not just the moves?

Good building bblocks are 1) and 2)
1)If you like dance on 1 or Power 2, definitively Razz m tazz Shines Videos ist worth buying. A goog collection of the basic shines (susy Q, flair, ...)and combos out of them. Also some syncopation steps.

2)Same idea ist mambotribe.com, steps are break both down on 1 and on 2, Tipico Mambo (Eddie Torres). The steps are short but you get a lot of inspiration. Buy both videos if possible.

More advanced with some more styling aspects ist Jay and Candy Shines videos. something like 8 long shines combo's. Lot of styling elements both for leaders and followers. The steps are break down using Mambo Tipico.

Ron & Bethana Rosario have a mambo shines video. Something like 8 combos very danceable. But i think you get definitively more for the money with the two videos mention in 1) and 2)

If you are a lady (i didn't check your profile sorry), have look at Griselle Ponce styling dvd. It is all about shines and body moves. If you are new to on 2 world, it is a good tool. she uses first only conga for break down and then full music. You get that on 2 feeling. I think even guy can use some of this steps, but maybe not that butt shaking stuff;-)

I ordered Sean Bristol's dvd's but still not there after 4 weeks.

By footwork, if you mean the basic and some simple variations of it, then lots of salsa beginner DVDs take that up—each one teaches a few of these. Most of them will take up the basic, side basic, back basic, cumbia step, turns, etc, but a few do teach the SusieQ, front crosses, flairs, hook step and son on. I found Dave Paris and Stephanie Gunon’s set of DVDs really good for beginners’ On 1 instruction. For anything beyond that, I guess you’d have to look at shines DVDs.

However, if you’re a lady, you have a whole lot more options because the ladies’ styling DVDs teach a lot of lovely footwork. One of the best I’ve come across is Juliet McMains’ two DVD set on ladies’ styling… Variations and Syncopations. She does a whole lot of simple but lovely looking variations and shines and teaches them just superbly. All broken down carefully, shown from the front and back, with and without partner etc. Very well done instruction.

Olivia Dasso—the wonderful Olivia Dasso—has a DVD on ladies’ styling too and she takes up 16 variations on the basic steps. They’re quite pretty too. Her DVD is available from her own site, http://oliviadasso.com .

Ron and Bethena Rosario’s Red Hot Salsa—Mambo Shines, has 3 combinations of shines, each made up of standard, well-known components like the SusieQ, the box step, back walk, swivel kick, hot foot, front crosses, flairs, hook turns etc. But these are danced on 2. If you’ve become really comfortable with timing enough to translate these into On 1 (presuming you dance On 1) you could pick up this video.
