Random Thoughts

Today just a few random thoughts about a salsa/mambo friend leaving. My good buddy and fellow SFer Groovy mambo is leaving Seattle for Cambridge in England, I am definitely going to miss him, I learnt a lot about "salsa" music and dance from him and I will miss our ongoing conversation about clave switches and Son montuno versus Cha Cha. Enjoy your time In England and spread the gospel according to Mambo U. I look forward to your updates on the scene in general across the pond.
Thanks for the kind words, MAMBO_CEC. I also appreciate our conversations about Salsa, dance, and SF shenanigans! I will miss you, lidiap, Salsa Student, and the rest of the crew. Thanks for making me feel welcome in Seattle! We'll certainly keep in touch!

Didn't know she went away, but I love Griselle and the fact that she's back!

I think she's the best female soloist of today and that her summertime choreography is best female solo choreography ever made :)

Yeah she quit about 2 years ago, like you said I don't know if she quit dancing altogether, but at least the international Congress scene, no longer performed with Eddie!!! As regards to best, I am always wary of using that term on Salsa Forums, as some people have their favs and get riled up when you say someone/something is the best, but I take your point, and that is one of the reasons I missed her. She has presence!!! Just like Alien.

Maybe it's just me, but Cano Estremera seems like an odd choice to perform at the NYC salsa congress.

Maybe not odd, maybe right* if one is seeking additional night ticket sales to people who like Cano (or Tito Nieves or GSR or Ismael Miranda). These fans will probably not dance much. They will be in front with cellphones recording the entire show**.

*Salsa congress marketing is all about addition & multiplication and not about subtraction & division (Although that depends on the ticket price. If its more than what it cost to see him the last time he came to NYC then its going to be a hard sell).
**Btw, as a musician on stage, does that look weird to you if there are 200+ people holding up a device pointed at the singer ?

Today for random thoughts I want to rant. Why can't promoters talk to each other, when they are setting up mega events?. At the end of September we have the ridiculous situation where you have two top instructors Shani Talmoor and Amauri Guillen (ex-Yamulee) here at the same time giving workshops. What if someone would like to attend both? This is a load of the proverbial pooh!!! We always seem to be shooting ourselves in the foot with this, I give up...We'll have two diluted events and noone benefits..end of rant.

Happens all the time here with events also...has totally watered down the scene. People stick to which dj/friends they are loyal to and/or politics...and instead of being together on a given night, everyone is spread out...sometimes between three places on the same night...Everyone loses.

We sprung a flash mob on the students at lunchtime today, which was a lot of fun. We'd practiced when we could; nobody was perfect but it was well planned in that pairs or groups of teachers joined in at different stages (yes, they made me do a shine solo in the middle). One of the younger teachers had put together some poppy fluff - Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, etc to dance to.

The next class I had Year 9s, who wanted a dance lesson, and to know "Why did you play such retro music, Miss?"
