In any case, be sure to check out Thursday's show!

The Passing of Another Great Artist: Bobby Paunetto

Bobby Paunetto, composer, arranger and vibráfonista passed away yesterday, Tuesday, August 10th at approximately 11:00pm at Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx, New York. He was 66 years old.

Bobby Vincent Paunetto was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 22, 1944, of Spanish and Italian lineage. At home, he would listen to the radio and it was his mother who led him towards music. His musical beginnings were jazz and Afro-Cuban music. His musical influences were Tito Puente and Cal Tjader.

***********************************************

Yes, there's more! From the vault of Fania/Mardigras, Código Music has just released Bobby Paunetto's 1965 jamming album, El Sonido Moderno/The Modern Sound of Bobby Paunetto! Hear tracks from it this Thursday!

Recorded as two separate sessions, the musicians include:

El Sonido Moderno session:
- Bobby Paunetto: vibes and marimba
- John Marrero: piano
- Art Ferrero: alto sax
- Fernando Oquendo: bass
- Tony Centeno: vocals, gourd tambourine
- Ray Cruz: timbales
- Tommy López: congas
- Jimmy Centeno: drums (traps)
- John "Dandy" Rodríguez: bongos, conga and cowbell
- Henry Zapata: bass (only on song, "Mambo Sevilla")

The Seeco session:
- Bobby Paunetto: vibes
- Bobby Rodríguez, Jr.: bass
- John "Dandy" Rodríguez: timbales
- Frankie Malabé: bongos, percussion
- Jimmy Centeno: drums (traps)
- Sonny Bravo: piano
- Willie Torres: lead vocals
- Santo Colón: chorus
- Chivirico Dávila: chorus

Recognized as one of the rarest treasures in the history of Latin jazz, El Sonido Moderno rightfully takes its place among the most elusive, sought-after gems ever pressed onto vinyl.

"I have watched Bob Paunetto & listened to this music with growing admiration. In the last five years his talent and repertoire have developed into what it is today. And it is with very great pleasure that I am writing about this young vibist.

Bob is back on the scene having just completed a tour of duty in the Army. Prior to his induction, he had done a few records for SEECO, but because he was away, his name was not well known.

Occassionally, in the past, I would encourage Bobby to sit in on the vibes with my own orchestra and we'd all have a great time.

I was most fortunate, indeed to have been invited to his recording session and much to my delight I evidenced the growth of this young musician. I could see and hear that Bobby had developed a sound uniquely his own-an accomplished feat in today's Latin market.

Now, I ask you to listen and dance to the excitin music of Bob Paunetto and his band."
Tito Puente

NO SHOW THIS MONDAY!

We tried very, very hard to get around it, but we see now that it is impossible to do so!

We are teaching a Spanish class soon when the new school term begins and we have to meet for the second week in a row to discuss the details.

Therefore, we will not be doing our Monday show, again! :(

We promise that this will be the last time.... at least for a long while.

Thanks for your understanding!

During this week's Thursday's show...

A listener just told us that she could not log onto the stream. The technical guy at the station just confirmed that the site is completely down!

They are working on the problem, but it is doubtful that we will be back up today! :(

We've postponed the interviews until next week.
