Radio Salsa Clásica / El Tornado Tropical con El Caobo

If you missed the PBS special on Latin music, you can see the whole thing on the internet: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/latinmusicusa/#/en/wat/01/01

I finally got around to watching online. It is convenient that each program segment is broken into several 7 min chapters.

Overall I thought the trend line traced in the 4 programs and the direction it is taking from there to be very interesting. The program describes this two sided trend that latin music has had in the US. On one hand the drive to appeal to a mass english language audience on the other hand the push to keep it real and authentic even if that means it stays in the cultural niche.

Examples of the mass appeal in the program: Freddy Fender (a leading tejano music artist who anglified himself) Los Lobos (who went English language initially before returning to their roots) Richie Valens (who composed/penned/performed la Bamba) and of course the superstars Carlos Santana , Gloria Estefan, Shakira, Ricky Martin etc.

Examples of keeping it real and trying to and in some cases finding a wider audience: Dizzie Gillespie (really the inventor of what is called latin jazz today), Fania All Stars (the whole lot of them, huge amount of footage with Hector Lavoe, Willie Colon, Johnny Pacheco, Cheo Feliciano) and more recently the reggaeton artists Daddy Yankee and especially Tego Calderon.

The next phase (that we are in today) isn't covered in the program: the immersion of non-latinos in latino culture. Maybe that'll be the follow up program.

Hey El Caobo, I'm listening but I'm keep losing my internet connect. I heard most of the interview with Kimberly Rivera. I also got to dance with Kimberly last night at Andy Cruz fundraiser. I like the Tony Pabon (El Tabacon) you play.

LOL... That Tony Pabón album was recommended by a GREAT dj here in Chicago name DJ B! You might just know of him! LOL That is really good stuff. Los gatos is my favorite tune on the album. One of the reasons that the connection starts dropping is when there are a lot of people logged onto the stream. Based on the RSVP on Kimberly's facebook event, there were a lot of people listening to her interview.

Are you headed to Zócalo's tonight?

I was more surprised about musicians who got very little or no coverage.. like Cachao,
Mongo, Rene Touzet and Cal Tjader.
I do realise, that in the time alloted, the choices had to be somewhat limited . Overall, very enjoyable ( and for me ,memorable ).

Cachao is featured with an interview, Mongo was pictured, Rene Touzet was mentioned (but not pictured) as the composer of one of Perez Prado's songs. Cal Tjader is not mentioned.

The slant of the program seemed to be more towards the "arrival" of latin musical culture and its place rather than as an artist by artist overview and their impact on a specific genre. It is not at all like the Ken Burns Jazz series. If it had been, it would have been at least twice as long and would have had to expand beyond the title: Latin Music USA. There is no way to describe how Latin Jazz evolved w/o a fully international perspective and thats just one genre. Expand that to all the other genre that are part of latin music and there would be no end in sight.
