Salsa Great Cheo Feliciano Dies in Car Crash at 78
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico April 17, 2014 (AP)

Police say Puerto Rican salsa legend Cheo Feliciano has died in a car accident in the U.S. territory. He was 78.

Police officer Israel Arroyo says Feliciano was alone in his Jaguar when he hit a post before dawn Thursday in the northern suburb of Cupey.

Feliciano was a member of the Fania All Stars and had established his own production company in the 1980s. He also became a prominent anti-drug spokesman after becoming addicted to heroin while living in New York and returning to Puerto Rico for rehabilitation.

He had recently been treated for cancer and pneumonia.

Feliciano is survived by his wife, Coco Feliciano, and four sons.

Funeral arrangements were not immediately known.

The picture of Cheo Feliciano and me was taken in New York, in a recording studio. I was blessed on that day to have him enter the elevator as I was leaving. He was on is way outside to smoke a cigarette. Of course, I was so excited to have an opportunity to speak with this great legend. When we exited the building, we chatted outside as he smoked his cigarette. He truly was a down to earth guy! I remember that he had a handshake like a vice grip. Just look at the picture of the two of us and compare the size of his fist with mine. Despite being much shorter that I, his fist if much larger!

Cheo, I am so glad that I had the opportunity to speak with you. You will live for eternity as we all enjoy your music. Rest in peace, brother Cheo!.

Thank you, Abayarde. The loss of Cheo Feliciano is difficult to grasp, but it is great to see the outpouring of appreciation and love for this tremendous artist in Puerto Rico and around the world. There were many impromptu tributes here in NYC this past weekend within the Salsa community.

I am only just finding this out now. One of the greatest of the great soneros; and from what I have heard, a great person as well, with a big heart.
