President Obama's Salsa Legacy?

The impact of the US embargo on Cuban music is well documented. Would normalized relations between the USA and Cuba lead to more and better quality Cuban music?

that depends in how big record labels handle the situation. if they decide to do it in "their" way (change everything to be more "profitable"), they gonna blow it up. just like it happened with reggaeton and classic salsa.

one of the lessons of the great success of "Buena Vista Club" concept was keeping it as natural as possible. but most recordings labels didn't get the message. instead, more independent labels or the artists own efforts are proving them wrong. latest work from Oreste Vilatos is a good example.

you can notice differences between Issac Delgado US recordings. I miss "el sabor" of his cuban recordings.

Loco, que pasa Loco!

Its an interesting question and the blogs all over are debating similar themes. If Europe is any guide, cuban music will be just one option among many. The only difference I can detect is that the Cuban musicians are much younger than the musicians of other salsa countries, so younger people feel a more direct connection to the stage performers. The groupie thing with pretty boys and pretty girls and the farandula chasing them down could happen but if it waters down the music as Charanga Habanera has done and Salsamayor is threatening to do, it could turn into a short lived fad.

The real deal musicians (like Pupy and others) will never water anything down.
