Pope Francis dies at age 88

White smoke marks election of new pope....White smoke poured from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel and the great bells of St. Peter's Basilica tolled Thursday after cardinals elected the 267th pope to lead the Catholic Church.

Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States elected as new pope....Born in Chicago, Prevost spent the early part of his career there working for the Augustinians. He served in Peru from 1985 to 1986 and from 1988 to 1998 as a parish pastor, diocesan official, seminary teacher and administrator. He was made a cardinal by Pope Francis

I saw this new last night while following the events in the sub-continent. While the western media is barely reporting much on the dangerous conflict in any details (it is fourth or fifth story with papal conclave being 1st or 2nd rank story on both Google news and Apple News)
Yes, our media's ignorance about India is striking. Unlike China, India is not taken serious, we hardly ever read from it in Germany. I guess UK is the only western country reporting often about India, due to colonial past. Biggest population in the world, but we ignore them.

its not a surprise that the Conclave is being the 2nd rank story in the Western media, for the reason that, it is a very important event in the Catholic world....by the way, the Pakistani-Indian conflict could become a serious war in the region

Cardinal Robert Prevost, now Pope Leon XIV, is considered to be a progressive.
What irony. The first win by the progressive left in 2025 is in the Catholic church.

In 2013, Francis succeeded retired Pope Benedict XVI as the 266th pontiff, becoming the first Jesuit and non-European to hold the church’s highest office in more than 1,000 years, leading more than 1 billion Catholics around the globe.

I didn’t realise he was first non European Pope. It says in more than 1000 years. Given we are in 2025 AD, does it meant there was a non-European Pope in the first millennia ?

Simon Peter, one of the 12 disciples of Jesus, is considered to be the first Pope....looking at the Roman Catholic Church in the first millennium, we can look at the Pentarchy, it refers to the governance structure of the early Catholic Church, consisting of five major Patriarchates: Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem....if i'm not mistaken, in around 1050 the Catholic Church splited into the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Catholic Church, take care all

Not sure. I read he was voted because both progressives and conservatives feel sympathy for him, he is diplomatic and votable for both sides. But yes, he is an augustine, that’s new and nearly revolutionary.

Pope Leo XIV called for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza with the release of hostages and delivery of humanitarian aid, in his first Sunday noon blessing as pontiff....He also remembered Pope Francis and his call for peace
