PCD: Post-Congress Depression

I'm pretty sure someone, somewhere has posted/blogged about this before, but here's my interpretation of the situation :-)

Nice article and so very true. What hits me the most is when I'm back at a local club and see a large percentage of the leads on the floor dancing cumbia to the salsa songs, or randomly doing moves without any regard for the beat.:-( It's going to be especially tough after NY!

I've used PCD as my excuse for not going out immediately after a congress has ended.

When I was a hardcore, go out every week to dance for years on end kind of person, the trick for me, really, was to *not* go out the week after a congress ends. Let the high you have from dancing with so many new partners, or partners that you haven't seen since the last congress, fade away for a few days or a week before venturing out to your local spots again. Failure to do that will just lead to disappoinment.

This is great advice Beto! I wish I had known to take a week off after my first salsa congress- I think I put myself into serious burnout mode afterward by not taking that week off!

I'm definitely going to do this after my next congress (San Fran, yeah!) Lately I feel like my salsa mojo is ever so delicate and needs protecting.

I'm glad someone can learn from my mistakes. :D

If you're reaching the stage in your salsa journey where burnout can set in, typically around year 3 or year 5 for some people, then, yes, a small buffer of time between the congress ending and your return to your weekly venues is highly recommended.

Hmmm... I think it also depends on your personality. Last time I cam back from a congress, I did the exact opposite: there is a salsa club around the corner where I live, where I never go because the music is loud and the place is full with latin@s without any formal training.

I was in such a high spirit that I just went over, without any expectation and I have to say: it was hell of a fun: Especially, my last dance of the night was with a latina of the above category: not technical at all, but I have to admit she had an exceptional connection for that category.

The music was also strange: live band, but a long medley of different songs switching in an organic way. I was dancing 6th nights in a row, so I was totally into the music and could easily predict most changes and accents and we danced an unidentifiable mixture of casino, rumba, cumbia and merengue, but strictly to the music and she went absolutely crazy. It was around a 10 minute song and I've never got such a long, huge hug at the end as then.

I found it absolutely worth dropping by, still I did not continue going there: I just needed that post-congress high in order to enjoy the place at all.

Ha, I didn't even know there was a syndrome named PCD that I was dealing with when I would do exactly the same.
I also don't go out a week (or more) before the congress just to be sure not to get sick and hopefully get some sleep.

Lol, now I can finally put a name to it ... every time I come back from a congress or festival, I always wondered why I was so depressed especially with crappy music that some of the local DJs play

I always get PCD! Thank you for finally putting a name to this sad, sad syndrome.

I think I may have an extra long-lived case right now though: The congress was in February and I feel that I'm still in the throes of it! I am still thinking, "why can't this be more like the congress...:("

Any advice or coping strategies?

i agree..i'd probably do the same..i'll see when i get back from SF. the key is expectations. a congress quite naturally will have a lot of the best dancers from nearby cities/states/provinces/whatever so it will obviously be better. that's what you pay for and you should be aware of this. when you return to your local scene you should expect to see what you're used to having already accepted that the congress experience was over so there really shouldn't be any disappointment.

I think I'm feeling the opposite now: Congress burn-out. I'm tired of being in a room with thousands of people I don't know, and want to get back to dancing with my friends.

Arggg! It's hit me, the realization that almost none of the local followers can dance like NY'ers, and that I'm going to have to go back to mostly On1 dancing!

Does PCD include fatigue, sleepiness, no desire to get off the couch and consistent urge of getting better and improving?
If so, then I am suffering a severe case of PCD
