Origin of On1 Timing

lost me when he spliced in that German guy who's actually counting contratiempo cha-cha

other criticism is talking about "break steps", that's a linear salsa concept that doesn't really feature in the Cuban dances

and where's Cuban "on 3" dancing? (I've heard that danzón used to be danced both a tiempo and contratiempo -- I'd guess the a tiempo was more likely "on 3", like bolero, but actually don't know)

overall I think most of it vaguely makes sense but is also a very vibed-together history; basically I think if you give ChatGPT a reasonable understanding of current different timings and ask it to fabricate a convincing story of how we got here, this is what you'd get

I figured it was just geographical preference. It spread out, people consumed the music, didn't have the "rules" and just chose the count they stepped on. Uneducated to the rules, the start of the musical phrase makes the most sense.
And the caballo rhythm used in guarachas and cumbias And eastern sones makes alot of sense to dance on 3. It feels correct.
I've never heard of dancing Danzon on 3. I'm not saying it's wrong, but as I understand it, it is danced to the clave also used for trova (1, 2,(2)& (3)&,4, 1 2 3 4 (starting on the 2 of the even beat side with right foot (as leader).
Plenty of Cubans dance on 3, and I quite like casino on 3.

Apart from the Cha Cha Cha explanation, I think he pretty much got it right. He needs to spend some time on SF
I have a Frankie martinez video where he Sars the son step is a variation of chacha. I almost $h@+ because the is historically arse backwards and he is a figurehead and shoukd use correct info.

I wouldn’t draw that inference. I am fairly certain he knows son came first. But if you are explaining son to someone who doesn’t know, it is fine to say son step is a variation of something that came later. That kind of explanation doesn’t establish a chronological order. You could also conversly say cha cha step is a variation of son. Whether that is true or an opinion is separate from chronology. Because the chronology is mostly factual.

"The montuno was first introduced into the composition of salsa songs in 1910".

I almost died, but I was definitely vocal about what I just heard.
