I'm not Puerto Rican but it just wouldn't be Christmas without pasteles! I got my fix last Saturday. We played at a party for the residents at Casabe Houses for the Elderly in East Harlem and let me tell you the ladies at Casabe can cook! The pasteles were off the hook. Coquito and flan for dessert. Man I was in heaven. And you should see the ladies and gentlemen dancing Salsa, some of them in their 80's and 90's.

I haven't had a decent pastel in years. They used to be a word mouth thing. You had to know someone, like scoring drugs.

exactly. A musician friend's mom cooks up a couple hundred each year and my friend takes orders for the band members. He shows up to the gig with a shopping bag full of pasteles . It's like scoring drugs. Haha. Haven't seen him this year, maybe he got busted.

I went to my dad's for dinner and was pleasantly surprised his wife had bought some pasteles to accompany dinner. They weren't the best, but pasteles are like pizza, even when they're not great, they're still pretty good.

It also called attention to something I had been thinking about, which is how pasteles differ between the PR type and the DR type, which roughly means "low platano in the masa" vs "lots of platano in the masa." I've come to appreciate the latter type as I've gotten older.
