NY salsa congress '09 - cheap accommodation?

Im thinking of going to the NY salsa congress in 2009 (there are cheap tickets until january).

can anyone suggest cheap accommodation near to the congress venue (i would like to stay in the hilton but i don't want to pay for it ;)) - so i'm looking for somewhere relatively near but cheaper.

thanks!

We always get NY apartment rentals through Craigslist and have never had a problem. Prices vary depending on the time of year and Labor Day weekend is one of the (slightly) more expensive times - it usually works out about $150 to $200 a night for a semi-decent place suitable for 2. We have a group going from the UK next year, so will be looking for a few apts in the same area, or one rather large one!!

The space thingie...mmm... Let's put it this way...We will not have enough time to think of the space, we'e either at the congress dancing, or at home dancing.... WHO CARES ABOUT SPACE? Am I not right?

hmm..that does seem enticing. Unfortunately, I will only know if I'll be on the east coast in September by March, not January...
For those who have gone before, how difficult will it be to find a hotel room close tot he venue in August? I mean, how booked does this event get?

The Hiton (congress venue) rooms sell out. In 2007 some of my friends had a hard time trying to book rooms at the hotel in May, and a girl I met at the congress told me she couldn't get a room at any of the hotels nearby. This year it wasn't as bad but it really is advisable to book early if you want to stay at the venue (you can cancel later if you don't need the room).

Agreed. Many DC salseros were shocked when they couldn't book hotel rooms for the 2007 congress a month or two before the event. The Hilton was fully booked by June of last year and many of the neighboring hotels were as well. The best thing to do is what Mac suggests: Reserve it now so you'll have it if you need it.
