Nathy Peluso

I haven't seen her mentioned here (she hasn't even made Salsa de la mata's playlist!)

She records popular music covering a variety of genres, wikipedia summarizes her better than I could https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathy_Peluso

In there are a couple of really rather good salsa tracks:

La presa, from her latest release, Grasa (May 2024). (That album opens with the bolero Corleone.)

Similarly classic salsa sound on Puro veneno from Calamba (2020)

My favorite track of hers might be Mafiosa (2021), here's a live recording (with full band!) from Madrid

and the music video

Is she being played at your socials? Or the EU festival circuit? Also do you know any other salsa tracks hidden in her discography?

Drum'n'bass-y remix of La Presa out now
, interesting take on it though I think this won't be playing at salsa socials

I don't think so, her singing sounds too "modern" for mambo festivals where DJs like to dive in their old 70s vinyl treasures, and for local socials it's too experimental. But maybe I'm wrong and some day I'll shazam her somewhere.

At least it's interesting she experiments this way because the salsa groove is so far away from rap. Can't say if I like it or not, I would have to hear it more often.

One thing that disturbs me with her is the same with nearly all modern female singers: they want to sound like little kids singing, baby voices. This is established in bachata sensual music and probably comes from pop music in general, I don't know because I don't listen to mainstream pop since a long time. For some reason it's fashion to be infantile, so listeners can better dream away from this world. Add some autotune here and there, and it gets annoying for me. She has more talent, she should kick her technicians and try again with her real voice.

It's been a while but I have played Mafiosa multiple times at my social. It's always a hit with the crowd since it's newer, catchy, and has a good bpm for most to dance to. Puro Veneno, I've played a couple of times and La Presa, I have, but haven't pulled the trigger on as of yet. Might play it for the next event.

So this day came faster than I thought: yesterday she was played at Porto Salsa Weekend (Portugal). While dancing I suddenly recognized her voice, it was one of the three songs above, but not sure today which one. I had a good dance partner and so enjoyed dancing to it.

I'm happy to hear that, thanks for investigating!

Not sure if I actually like her tunes but I would probably play something of hers if I were DJing simply to keep the sound updated.

My strategy: Since her songs aren't familiar to the general salsa crowd (of any level), songs like "Mafiosa" along with Zayra Pola's "Mi Bomba Sono" energize the room from a fresh angle. I've been testing Jeremy Bosch as of late as well but it's hit or miss.

I'm unfamiliar with his releases but he's definitely a phenomenal salsa singer and musician. A great sonero (improviser) too.
Some of his music has a jazzy/futuristic R&B vibe which eventually transitions back and forth with "salsa". The songs I've played, the audience has been thrown off with the intro and then you see the "ohhhh it's salsa" look on their face and dancing takes off.

Will have to check him out. I mostly know him from YT vids of him singing and playing live with the Latin Giants of Jazz (and possibly similar groups) in which he's had a more traditional salsa role.

got to say I like the song Veneno. Played it last night and it people on the dancefloor seemed to have a lot of fun to it. I really like the arrangements and production. La presa is not bad, very willie colon-ish sound. Don't know yet if I would play it at an event though. my respects to her. But For a pop artist doing Salsa it could be a lot worse!

I'm always hesitant to play it because I don't know where to put it in my set, but the more I listen to it, the more I see it as the last song of the night. After the announcement, the way it's set up gives everyone time to find their person knowing it's the end. Then it starts to drive and how it approaches the ending feels like the end credits to a movie. Then we go home! So the next time I play, that's where I'm going to put it and see how that works!

After 21:00 she's singing her own songs, right?

Edit:Mafiosa from post above.
Also I'm very happy how Gia's career has developed.
