More Control...

Does this just come with time? I mean basically being able to stop your body, change directions and just go where your mind wants without a lot of effort. While I feel like I'm better able to catch signals from leads now, I feel like I do still overshoot sometimes.

There is a saying that practice makes perfect - however, there is another saying that goes practice makes permanent. Meaning if you are doing it wrong and continue to do it wrong it will get built into your muscle memory and will be hard to break the habit. So, I do believe it is more than just practice - its important to find your core as Chinita stated and seek out proper instruction.

Time AND awareness, IMHO.

You gain control by finding your centre.

You are absolutely right -- that's why awareness needs to come first.

I'm doing pilates and it does help. A teacher also recommended Quigong, and other martial arts based workouts such as tai chi and aikido will probably be good. Also yoga, maybe?

I used to do Yang style Tai-chi for many years and we used to do Qigong and Chi-gung exercises as a warm-up, although Qigong is actually a seperate and much older art in itself.

Both are excellent for building your awareness of your body and mind and are a form of moving meditation.

In terms of use within Salsa it can help specifically with ability to control and direct tension within your body, make movements flow using the whole body (not just your arms), breathing while moving and with learning balanced foot placement.

If you also learn Pushing Hands (a partner based exercise/game used to train partners to connect and direct your own and your partners energy in a conflict situation) you can use it to improve connection and maintaining balance while connected.

In China there is also a dance form of Tai-chi, which I saw when I was in Shanghai a few years back. It's really beautiful and the girl extends her body a lot more in all the forms.
