Mens shoes??? Need help Salseros........

Looking for dance shoes that don't look like dance shoes.........I really don't like the selection of dance shoes for men I see out on websites because all seem to be ballroom shoes. I also don't like the clumpy dance sneakers out there by bloch, capezio, and sansha, etc.

I don't know exactly what I'm looking for but not impressed with what I've seen...........I want something more casual than dressy and prefer a white shoe over a black shoe. I've actually created my own dance shoes by purchasing white martial arts shoes and having suede soles put on them and they are so light and easy to dance in, I just wish I could find something like that already with suede soles on them. A cool retro tennis shoe with suede soles would be cool too.

I know some people don't like the white shoes that look like socks or slippers, but I think their cool and you can really see the fancy footwork in them as opposed to regular black shoes.

Any places on the web where I can order anything like this?? Or should I just stick with making my own dance shoes by putting suede soles on them?

how about jazz shoes? have you tried those? (I would not dance in anything else). Given your description of what you did with the martial arts shoes, these might be exactly what you're looking for.

Nothings wrong with ballroom........I just don't like ballroom style shoes with the patent leather......too formal for my taste.

Thanks NYguero, I will try Jazz shoes, but most places seem to only have women jazz shoes........are there some specifically for men or are they unisex? Any recommended places online that I can order from?

after buying several dance shoes, jazz are my favorites. Yes they are unisex, and come with rubber or suede bottoms, I have both and use the suede only when the floor is worthy :) and they are actually cheaper that all the other shoes I have. It seems though that I am going to have to buy a new pair every 6 to 9 months due (depending on amount of use, floor conditions)

with all shoes it seems that there is a period of getting used to it, after that your foot becomes stronger/comfortable and the floor is yours

buy one size smaller that street shoes :)

Robert,

It's funny that you should mention taking martial arts shoes and covering the soles in leather; I have a pair of puma martial arts shoes that I'm thinking about doing the same thing to.

Anyway, let me give you some suggestions:

Like the other Salseros mention many of us use Jazz (practice) shoes. I usually buy Bloch (split sole jazz shoes) Leo's (Protégé™ Jazz Oxford).

However I have to tell you that now days I don't use them that much (unless I'm in a practice studio or maybe using them in a competition where I want a sure base underneath me).

For club dancing, I tend to wear mens "exotic" dress shoes that have a leather sole. I can find different styles that are fun and funky; try googling some of these manufacture names and see what you think:

* Mark Nason
* Giorgio Brutini
* Stacy adams
* Steve Madden

Good Luck

Sometimes the leather sole has a finish on it that makes it slippery. In those instances I have this really strong wire brush that I'll use to brush up the bottom of the sole which works well. I'm not talking about using a regular dance shoe brush, this one is a wire brush that is normally used for scraping paint off of wood.
