Meaning of Afinque

We've all heard of Willie Rosario being called Mr. Afinque. The only, small description I have found was a band that was tight or had it together.

Do you have a different knowledge of its meaning? Is there an exact definition? All my findings have been nil. Not in the glossary of terms on this site or descarga.

I have always thought it meant someone with soul, swing, and sabor.

Thanks for any help

groups or orchestras with afinque are those that masters the concept of blended unity while they play. In most cases, they follow a specific member or a group of members that mark the rhythm.

I know... very difficult to explain it with words, even in Spanish... :P

Still Mambo T description is the shortest and best answer!

I always mention Willie Rosario's band as the best example. Maybe I'll never see him as a fancy timbalero, but man, his is one of the best on this.

Afincar is translated as , To acquire property or real estate- also to settle down or establish oneself....

That said when I first asked a friend of mine what AFINQUE meant she told me it meant to be cool or to be in it.

So I guess in reference to Willie Rosarios nickname being Mr Afinque, you guys are right on the money with what the word means.

To me, the word means "tight". The band sounds tight. Clean. There is no mess or mistakes in the performance. The horns are in tune, etc.

A timbalero friend of mine ( who is always talking about Willie Rosario ) says it also means to play straight time on the drums with nothing fancy going on. Just groove and swing. That's pretty much what Abayarde said.

Either straight or swing, otherwise it does not compute for me.

Salsa musicians use the word "swing" in a different way to swing time jazzers. It means basically groove... the sum of whether each subdivision is pushy or behind the exact meter. Jazzers use "swing" to indicate a triple feel written without triplets.

Exacto.
