Mayan 2007

Well, it's that time of year again and for this years 12th annual Mayan competition they've added a Liz Lira voice intro and seem to be updating the website throughout the competition, instead of after like usual. No clips yet, but 12 of the first round contestants names are up for both pro and am.

This thread is for discussion of the Mayan competition, not posting of clips. I leave it up to the mods whether to move it to videoclips or keep it here where it has wider access.

Checkout clubmayan.com web site for further info and you'll need flash and pop-ups enabled.

Anyone know how it's progressing?

yes, the competiton was ok this weekend.. im a regular at the mayan when competitition are goin, this is my 3rd year.. can wait for what this year will bring overall...

I've been keeping up with it a bit. This is my second year going. The amateurs seem light in interest this year... many qualifying automatically because of the lack of competitors. The pros are stacked pretty heavily though... with many couples having made 2 attempts and still trying to get through (my friends included :( )

Liz Lira is the new host instead of Josie Neglia. I haven't gotten used to Liz yet, and still prefer Josie. Liz's presentation is too dramatic for my tastes. And I'm sure the guys preferred Josie and her racy outfits .

The only thing I have to complain about thus far is the apparent favoritism shown in the qualifying rounds, when supposedly audience applause indicates who passes through. It seems that you're automatically through if you've been a finalist in past years, REGARDLESS of how your performance was that night. And the Mayan, the host, or whomever, just ignores the audience applause and chooses on its own. So either someone gets screwed over as someone else with less audience reaction gets put through, or they determine it was "too close to call" and allow 3 couples through instead of 2. Both options make for bad business, but the first one especially sucks.

Amazing Competition

Hey All,

Jaime Jesus here from Sydney Australia, just wanted to say we are very keen on knowing all the latest updates on the mayan comp this year.

My partner and I competed last year and placed third overall and it has been our favourate salsa experience to date. We were thinking on doing it again this year but unfortunatly time does not permit us to do it becase we are very busy with other events.

Good luck to all the competitors.

Kind Regards

Jaime Jesus

i agree with a previous post, there is politics involve at the mayan. I know few dancers or have meet prior pro dancers competitos that have been discourage from participating due to major favoritism to some of the competitors. Well, i was there last night to watch the semi-finals .. (few times int eh year that parking in the nearest lots go up to $25, ridicolous!)i was very impressed to some of the couples. Alex Silva qualify second, but he sure put a nice show. I felt bad for one of the couple who stuble almost at the very beggining..

just an fyi, at the professional semi finals 2 weeks ago... the points rankings put martin & esti at 1st, alex da silva & alien at 2nd, and jose & sandra at 3rd. i didnt come across any clips of ADS & alien's new stuff, but martin & esti can be seen here: youtube.com/watch?v=1CE3_d31wvs, and jose & sandra here: youtube.com/watch?v=SvFOfxXOlBw

hi jaime!

Jason from Singapore here. Hope you remember me. Performed at the Sydney Salsa Congress with my wife, Jerinne. Then met up again in Hong Kong for the HKSF (including an enjoyable dinner by the roadside with you, Lil Liz and Paul Young). Hope you and Lil Liz are doing well. Look forward to meeting you again soon! :)

Oh dear, now I'm not sure whether to let my G/f know you're posting here JJ!

You're her hero after seeing you with Edie TSF at blackpool! I've even had to tell her that you like to huff kittens in a feeble attempt to keep ahead of you in her "favourite man" list!

Thanks for the clips! Also the Amateur clips are now up on the ClubMayan site.

The international qualifiers moved from being a Friday night, to a Thursday night. Only 2 couples competed and advanced to the finals Saturday.

The finals were this past Saturday. Martin and Esti got first. Jose and Sandra got second. David and Samantha got third. Alex and Alien got fourth.

Wow! Bit of a change from the last few years.

Any word on when the clips will be up in the professional section of the site?

It's always a long wait between the results and seeing it for us on the other side of the pond.
