Loved this dance video ....

So would people call this casino or Cuban salsa? This is from the early 80s, although I don't know the exact year. I don't know where to find video of what people were dancing to in the 70s.

Looks like primitive casino. Less refined than what came later. Or may be the average quality of the dancers in this video is lower.

As you already noted cuban salsa and casino are synonymous. I don't think I heard anyone splitting the hair between the two.

I think Cubans themselves changed it when teaching classes overseas and to tourists.

All dances change, borrow, and steal. Every dance I know has changed from how it was danced in 70s, 80, and 90s. Salsa and Mambo also changed. If you look at a lot of EU festival videos, we can see salsa dacin changing right before our own eyes.

When instructors are competing to try gain an edge in the market (that is the students) they introduce new elements. Or repackage old ones as new. Instructors are always trying to sell (new) cool moves to the students.

In my opinion, what is marketed as Cuban salsa can be more or less linearized, look like typical Casino, or can look like Son Cubano. Whereas Casino is inherently circular and can be danced to non-Son music.

The differences in the dances are also fluid. How would you define when something ceases to be X and becomes Y?

Yeah, I didn't exactly see anything I can think of as anticipation, maybe he did some sort of brief stop there or something? I did some some things that I haven't really seen in Cuban dancing in general during the 20 or so years I've been dancing casino.
There is (was) a guy with dreads (he cut them) in Baila Habana. He uses a lot of pauses and even some slow hand flicks etc. Still very much casino vs salsa (in appearance) but quite uncommon. It's definitely his one style.

I don't want to alarm anyone, but I saw a few back rocks before enchuflas and turns......
