Son Montuno
There are occasional audio glitches but otherwise good audio
It might be the live situation or just my ears..
But to me they sound really really different now. Have to get used to them like this.
To me it really doesn't sound different form what I have heard live from them before. Maybe I'm missing some subtle details. There are some good interviews with Samuel in Spanish these days. I expect the new CD will still have the Juan Formell touch to it since it was essentially finished before he passed. So it may be a while before we see exactly where Samuel is taking the band.Sorry, I forgot to thank for posting! Of course thank you, TM!
To Salsim: Yes, hardcore is a little bit what I felt... But then live gigs often sound harder, so I can't say.
I just got used to this groovy but still smooth sound of los Van Van in my life, and I miss it on that video.. Perhaps it's time to change something though instead of trying to imitate a sound created by musicians who left or passed away...
But somehow I hope they take a step back and depart from their original sello first... We'll see
Best regards to both of you!
Well that's a shame! You'll have to catch them on their next European tour.Then it's probably just me.
As much as I love them and as many times as I listen to them a week - never seen them live!![]()
@Slowdance
I can only speak for myself, but what meant with it is:
Watching the video, it sounded like harder than the versions I know, even the singing. But as I said, it often seems that way when you see live videos, so don't take me too serious.
@MAMBO_CEC
I wasn't talking about the quality, for if that was what you meant...
Sadly we can't stop people from leaving the bands so we just have to hope that their replacements are good. When Mayito entered the band replacing Mayito el Flaco the fans didn't like him at all, but since then he's become an icon. I really like Mandy so I think he's a good match for Los Van Van. But you prefer the Pedrito, Mayito, Robertón line-up. It was definitely quite good and that's what Van Van was when I started listening. There are people who have never gotten over Pedrito leaving the band. But I also like Lele. He has gotten to sing a lot of really good songs IMO. And Yeni is great. Obviously she has a feminine voice, but the lyrics to her songs are not wimpy crying over a man lyrics.I wasn't talking about quality either, I was just thinking how their sound has changed, they always produce quality , but I liked them a lot more when Pedrito, Mayito and Roberto were in the band, I think and this is my personal opinion, they had a harder edge to them, but I understand that bands evolve and they are still popular, jus a preference and a little mickey taking!!
No, it's another new pianist. Roberto Carlos "Cucurucho" left to start his own project that seems to be more of a jazz kind of thing. Not so strange considering he's part of the Valdés clan. The new guy is named Efraín Chibás nickname Pacho. I don't know much about him except that he was musical director of the concert Y como ayer… hoy. Un homenaje a Benny Moré which won a Cubadisco special recognition prize for the DVD of the concert. He is in the Toronto videoI don't really know the new singers so no opinion on that.
But I have been taking a closer look at the "new" pianist. If it's still the same one that plays with them since Pupy left, I think he's fantastic, I even imagine him developing the style further...
Probably many musicians can somehow be replaced without completely changing a band's sound, just with singers it's more delicate, and when it's about Formell it gets really really hard. So let's see where it goes from there!
