Los Angeles Salsa Congress 2011

It's not for a while, but they're advertising a special price of $150 that expires tomorrow. I've never been, but it's tempting, especially now that it's going to be downtown instead of by the airport.

How does it compare with the NY Congress? And do they provide free water at the socials?:)

Last time I went to LA congress as in 2008 and followed it up with NYSC the same year. I remember Macmoto also attended both that year. You can get her opinion and Brownie's.

I had more fun dancing at LA than NY. I also thought the average quality of dancers in LA was better than NY. Most people I danced with in NY were out-of-towners. Most people I danced with at LA were from socal, i.e. locals. I also think LA had a lot bigger dance floor and number of dancers than NYSC.

Yes LA had free water!!

Right :)

The biggest and most obvious difference of course is the style, so if you have a strong preference for On2, you won't enjoy LA. There were people who danced on2, but quite a few of them were transitioners who struggled with the timing a bit. I also had a bit of a problem with the power leading style of many LA leaders. No idea what the followers are like there as it was before I started leading. I got asked constantly at LA, which probably means there were more leaders than followers - it was certainly not because of my amazing dancing ability!

I really liked the fact that the LA congress provided three different rooms to dance in so you could dance during the shows. I also like the pool parties and the dancing in the lobby of the hotel in the afternoon. I don't know if these things are going to stay in the new venue though, but the general impression I got from the LA and NY congresses in 2008 was that I like the overall setup and arrangement of LA better but enjoyed dancing more at the NY one, even though I dance both on1 and on2.

The NY congress had free water back in 2007. Let's hope the water tanks will stay at the LA congress...
