Location of clubs / schools in NY

Hey,

I'm looking at sublet.com for an apartment for 4 weeks. Are most / many of the clubs and schools located in a certain area? It would be nice to rent a place not too far from all the action. UWS, LES, Mid Town.... ?

Thanks

Do you not know how to use google? Or you just feel like having everyone else do your work for you? (sorry, silly question, clearly you do love having someone else make your choices for you  )

All the salsa schools have been mentioned in various NY threads, you can google them and find their addresses from their site, stick them all into google maps (there is an add pin option, and you can create your own maps under "my places" (thought young people these days were supposed to know this sh.t)), click on the metro stations to see the lines come up, and then work out where you want to live. You know which schools you might want to take classes in, they are all over the place so hard to make a single recco.

Ditto all the clubs are mentioned here http://www.salsanewyork.com/calendar.htm, which has also been mentioned to you. The clubs people prefer have been mentioned in Hitting New York thread, seriously suggest you read all that. Again, not hard to add these all to google maps.

When you do these, where to stay becomes an obvious few choices ;). Then all you have to do is read a little about these districts on Wiki to decide what suits you best.

:D

Thanks. If someone would ask me about Tel Aviv I'd answer in two words, clearly easier than typing that whole post, I've heard about google you know :-) If no one will threw the quick answer I'll do the 30 minutes research :-S

Thanks

It's worth making your own map...
...if I was going to take SR class, it would change where I stayed for example, because I would want easy access to that metro line.

...as you are going in winter, you might want to pick location that is best for getting back from more clubs rather than getting to class, as walking in daytime is relatively less cold.

Good one. You see, it's always worth to ask.

I usually stay somewhere around /inbetween Garment district, Korea Town, Chelsea, Flatiron as I like to walk back a few blocks to chill out after socials :) Unless it is summer when I can walk it, if you stay in these areas you need to get the metro up to Eddie's class and the other schools ie SR :)

Yes, taking the subway is probably a better idea than walking 100 blocks to the Santo Rico studio. :p

I like to stay around Union Square. Nice neighborhood, pretty calm for Manhattan:), and easy to get anywhere by subway. I'm interested in how you do with a sublet, as it's something I've also considered. Up to now, I've played it safe and stayed at Hotel 17, or the Jane in the meatpacking district. But those 'budget' places are still over $100/night.

The Jane is an interesting budget option, sharing bathrooms for the low budget rooms, but a cool location in the Village... Check out the Comfort Inn on 71st near CPW... some nights it's around $100 or not much more. Holiday Inn Manhattan View in LIC has some good bargains on certain nights, too. My wife and I stayed there this past summer when work was being done on our apartment, two subway stops to 59th/Lex.

Guys, I don't know what you're talking about! If you sublet you can get a much better deal than a hotel room. I can get a 1 bedroom in front of Lincoln Center for $3800, that's $126 a night.

Thanks for the Salsa map, great job!

Question - as I contact and get replies back from schools, with different names of instructors who could take me, is this forum a good place to ask for their reputation? or should I ask the schools for references? Again sorry for the newbie questions...

Why a one bedroom? You won't really be home much, you can get a studio and save the money (or do more privates :p). Then you'll really live like a New Yorker. :p

If it is a big school, then if they are suggesting someone to you for privates, you can assume they are good enough... I'm not sure what you want a reference for? That they have taught before???

...a different question is if they are going to suit you:) You should take one class first to see if you get along before booking more.

Also, I think you are going to be in for a shock. Most actually decent teachers anywhere are unlikely to spend much time in a private teaching you complex patterns, they will work on you steps and technique. So, find some group classes for all those patterns you are keen on :P

I just hate having "not enough" moves and having to do the same thing over and over again five six times in a song (or more!) and the next song again and again . I get bored, the girl gets bored, and I assume people who are watching us get bored. That's why I also tend to mix "NY" with Cuban because then I have more moves..

Must....
have.....
patterns..............

Patterns can be learnt anywhere, but few can teach how to make everything you do look and feel right. If you get the subtle things right you won't need so many patterns, but those you do learn will flow much better.

Got it. My (Cuban) teacher in Krakow kept telling me the same but I told her that I didn't feel that I have enough moves yet. I told her that it's like learning a language and that before working on pronunciation or diction I should have enough words to be able to speak in the first place! I'm not sure its the best metaphor... but I agree. I also keep asking myself why don't I learn patterns from youtube...

You can do both, just not at the same time. Part of what makes it easier to learn patterns is recognizing where the lead is coming from and what makes the move work. Plus it's much easier to remember strings of phrases (ie. recognizing that that specific 8 count is a CBRT led from a different angle) than it is to remember the individual moves and the entire sequence together.

its not all about patterns... I HATE IT when a guy dances the whole song and its all about patterns. HELLOOOOOO... SHINE- SHINE - SHINE- SHINE
that is your variety right there, the shine!!
