Leaning on forward break

I saw myself on video for the first time in a while and I noticed that when I break forward, I look like I'm putting my foot out and leaning my whole body back. While back breaks and backrocks feel completely natural, forwards feel just kind of...icky. I think it comes from trying to lead with the toe and stay off my heels. Am I doing something wrong? Could it be a weight transfer issue?

The forward break is the hardest part for me too.

I was instructed to push myself away from the feet, instead of leaning on it. Of course it has the danger to look like leaning back. In order to avoid that, you should really use your front leg to push against the floor, one also has to take care of the spine: should not allow it to bend backward.

Using the floor is also important for the back break and I agree with you, that it is much easier then the forward break.

What I have most problems is coming out of the forward break. That is the reason I like ET on2 style, because I have 2beats instead of one to do that gracefully, while on1, I always feel an unnatural haste at the 3rd beat.

Use your ankles (calf muscles). This will enable you to move your body more in the slot versus just stepping with your feet or legs. If you use your ankles and dance INTO the floor, you will be able to move your body further forward with more control.
