Would like to hear any recommendations for some funky Latin jazz albums. Upbeat, good baseline, and some rhythm would be nice.

Two songs that have caught my attention recently are:

Joe Baatan - The Bottle
Candido Camero - I'm On My Way

Anything similar then please post some suggestions.......

Greetings,

Before I got bitten by the salsa bug I was collecting and DJing funk based music for many many years, from that time the Latin absolute monsters I most loved are:
Cedar Walton - Latin America
Tempo 70 - El Galleton (more funk than jazz, very highly recommended)
Candido - Jingo
Ted Curson - Fire Down Below
Aguabella - Desire (soulful track)
El Chicano - Viva Tirado (heavy Mexican funky jazz)
Ray Barretto - Pastime Paradise
Eddie Cano - Slip Slip ('60s style rather than funky but a killer tune)
Horace Parlan - Congalegre (bad '50s Latin jazz dance with Ray Barretto's faultless presence)

Those are all tracks not albums, that's what I recall from the top of my head, next time I'm checking some dusty vinyls I'll see if I can spot any more old favourites. Every one of those tracks is a peach, I don't think any of them are suitable for salsa dancing but that's not what you asked for.

If you want some Latin jazz that is more suited for salsa dancing try Cal Tjader - Alonzo, Cal Tjader also did some funky cuts in the '70s, if you like Latin jazz then he is unmissable.

Please let me know how you get on,
Yuca

Thanks, Yuca. That looks like a great collection of songs to seek out. Should keep me going for awhile...

If you are interested in this kind of music, then I would like to recommend the site:

Good salsa, and some groovy Latin jazz........

Here's a couple more that certainly fit your description of what you're seeking:
Joe Bataan - Latin Strut
Louie Ramirez - Barrio Nuevo
If only the Latin hustle would come into vogue on the salsa scene, I could start playing tracks like this.

Thanks for the info! When you get some time, do recommend some of your favourite funky albums in your collection................

As regards the tracks I have already listed:

some I've got on long deleted '80s jazz compilations (on vinyl) however you can find Tempo 70 and Joe Bataan on Nu Yorica and Louie Ramirez and Candido on Nu Yorica 2, 2 compilations that are both still in print I believe.

Desire is from Aguabella - Hitting Hard, Viva Tirado is from El Chicano - Viva Tirado, Pastime Paradise is from Ray Barrreto - La Cuna and Slip Slip is from Eddie Cano - Brought Back Live From PJs (not funky but a brilliant album and Slip Slip is a monster). How easy these are to acquire now I cannot say but I'm sure you can find out easily enough. If they're available get them.

The rest I suggest you search for on more recent compilations, particularly the Cedar Walton - it really is a superb track.

Happy hunting,

Yuca

p.s. Latin Jazz Dance Classics Vol 2 on Ubiquity is great as well, most of it's pre-funky though. Vol 1 is probably great too but I've not got it so I can't say.

A couple more:
Azymuth - Jazz Carnival
Samba Soul - Chove Chuva / Mas Que Nada
These are both very funky Brasilian Latin jazz funk, the 1st was a massive hit, the second wasn't, they're both heavy tracks.
This thread really takes me back . . .

Very helpful. Thanks again, Yuca.

How is your Colombian salsa collection? I will have to give you some tips on that in return or something......

Will update you on my Latin jazz journey in the coming weeks.

I don't know if my suggestions are similar. These artists are currently performing, composing and could be touring:

Poncho Sanchez: straight up latin jazz, danceable tracks, 3 more recent releases. I have Latin Soul and Soul of the Conga.

Chuchito Valdez: same as above with a lot of Afro-Cuban quotes in his music. I don't have any of his albums but have seen him live several times.

Nachito Herrera: easily one of the best latin pianists playing today. His live shows combine quotes of Cuban standards, Jazz bebop standards and references to the classical music of J.S. Bach plus Earth Wind & Fire and the occasional New Orleans Blues. His CD's (on CDbaby) are kind of tame compared to his live acts.

Arturo O'Farrill: I have heard many of his compositions played as covers by other bands but have never seen him live. I hope he goes on tour some day so I can catch up.

Rebeca Mauleon: I have seen her live once and the most impressive aspect of her career is her teaching. I know of students who studied with her and she may well become one of the most influential latin jazz piano influences. She teaches her students to develop this breathless rolling style on piano where the montunos just tumble into each other. (not a very musical description, but thats what her style feels like).

I love a lot of Colombian salsa, particularly the slow and medium tempo tracks, feel free to list your favourites, I'm sure there's plenty of good ones I don't have.
How's the salsa in Tokyo?
