Latin Dance Academy London

www.latindanceacademy.co.uk

This is a new project being launched by Mario, Susannah, Shaan and Inaki Fernandez. Its running a series of 6 week studio based Salsa and Bachata courses. Most salsa in London is taught in a 'class then club' setup. These are pure classes focusing on good clean technique, lead and follow skills. The classes are run at various levels. The idea is that class sizes are limited with even numbers of leaders / followers. As you sign up the the whole course you progress from week to week. You need to be at the correct level to take each course. There are taster classes running throughout May in order for you to check out the syllabus and help ascertain your class level. All the details are on the website. I pop the info here as I thought it would be of interest to other London based dancers. I'll post my own experinces below.

My Taster session.

Well I tried a couple of the taster classes at aforementioned Latin Dance Academy last night and most dishearteningly discovered i'm a level lower than I thought I was. Not exactly the ego boost I was looking for! :D :D

There weren't that many people there, but I think that's because the advertising only came out this week so it's mainly word of mouth right now.

After the shock of discovering that i'm not actually gods gift to dance wore off a bit I've decided to sign up for a 6 week course. Like many of us in London, I'm predominantly a club taught follow and I now realise to what extent I'm lacking in the techniques I need to take my salsa up a notch. I have no idea if these classes will do the trick, but it took Shaan the whole of about 3 minutes to pinpoint where my multiple spins are going wrong when dancing NY on 1, and explain it in a way I could visualize and understand. I've been practicing in the bathroom at work today (don't laugh you all do it too!) and I can already see a difference.

The taster classes (only available during May) are designed to show you for each level both where the 6 week course starts and where it will end. You know you're 'tasting' the right level if you feel pretty comfortable for the first 15 mins or so of the class and are feeling a bit scared by the end!

Oh - and the floor is AMAZING. So good I won't wear my jazz shoes there again I needed more resistance than they provided I was skidding all over the place.

Tasters are running for the next 3 weeks I think or at least the next 2. There's nothing else running like this in London as far as I know. Be nice to support it and see if it gets off the ground. They (Mario, Susannah, Inaki and Shaan) seem to have a strong product and lots of passion for the project.
