2 good albums but where is Johnny Cruz from?
Meaning, has he been in the business for a long time? I have a feeling he has but maybe his name is just slipping my mind. Can anyone give any info about him.... Thanks!!!

Gabe,

He's been around for a long time. He's one of the many career sidemen who live in the city that no one knows about, because they're in the background. He's played with a few bands here and there. But it's only recently that he's being kind of recognized after releasing his debut CD and his latest. He also produced a concert at the Lehman Center paying tribute to Adalberto Santiago who appeared as a guest. He's a percussionist (timbalero) but his main gig was as a Hardware Store Owner in Spanish Harlem. For the past few years he's produced and hosted his very own public access TV show called Windows of [or to] the World, revolving around his perspective of the salsa world. Playing Salsa Dura videos or plugging the radio shows and concerts that revolve around 'Salsa Dura' as well as his own tape recorded performances of his orchestra.

He just recently converted his Hardware store into a sort of 'Salsa' museum or exhibition gallery.

Check out this article that appears in the NY Times: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/02/22/the-sound-of-east-harlem-in-a-hardware-store/

I enjoy his playing. What I love about those 2 albums. He's a timbalero & these are his albums but yet, you don't really hear his playing that much. He rarely solos on both albums, if at all! I like that.
