iPhone... an incredible musicians tool...

Someone mentioned the original Sony Walkman ( cassette ) in another thread and I was remembering how cool it was when I bought the first one on the market back in 1980. Now I could walk the streets of New York listening to my own soundtrack, whatever music I wanted to hear, just for me. It was a revolution.

Then, yesterday I realized just how revolutionary my iPhone is as a tool for a musician like me. All I need to bring to the practice room is my trumpet and my iPhone and earbuds. It wasn't always so... my iPhone has all of these things packed right inside... my load got a whole lot lighter. Yup, there's an app for that...

Not only all that, but I use my iPhone to manage my gig calendar, track my gig income, take photos of sheet music at rehearsals to practice later on my own... 90% of all communication with band leaders and other musicians about gigs, rehearsals, music is done by text messaging.

And I'm just scratching the surface... many musicians are using the iPhone ( and iPads ) to record and mix music.. I'm talking good quality stuff, too.

We live in a pretty cool world these days...

It's amazing for sure. But I'd just like to remark that just about any smart phone does the same thing nowadays :)
Oh, you're absolutely right. I could have said "smart phone" instead of iPhone... but iPhone is what I have. Actually, I've been checking out those Samsung Galaxy phones, and even the Note "phablet". Pretty awesome and a lot more screen real estate than an iPhone. Might make a move to the Samsung next time... it's just amazing what you can do with these devices.

they also serve as a handy backup device for DJing :)

i ran into problems one night and was able to play four or five songs from the phone while i sorted it out. nobody noticed
I was thinking that there must be some good use of smart phones for DJ's.

Samsung's Note is too big. can't help to feel annoyed when someone use it as a phone; it's like having a dining plate hiding half of your head.

Djay software for controlling the laptop version from the iphone with bluetooth is pretty cool, but it gets shadowed by the phone's short living battery.

A friend got one recently so I was checking it out... yes it's HUGE as a phone, but with my aging eyes I like the bigger screen. Also takes amazing photos/video. As a phone it's so big it reminds me of those humongous cell phones that first came out... and they cost like $3000! lol I'll never forget walking down 40th Street one day and seeing someone talking into one of those... I was like, WTF?
