If I could go one week without hearing this wretched song in NYC...

"Alegria" by the Fania All-Stars. (I'd link it here, but I'm too new!)

I'd be so happy. So very very happy. I like to limit my elevator music to actual elevators.

To take this theme further, does anyone else in NYC feel the state of music here (as heard at the main socials) is poor? I do, and I've felt this way for a while now. You can predict quite accurately what you'll hear when you go out, and it's sad. Some of the list below is specific to a certain DJ/social, but many are omnipresent:
  • That updated version of "La palomilla" that has a shout out of a DJ near the end;
  • The Marc Anthony version of "El cantante" (REALLY?!?!?) and/or "Vamos a reir un poco" which is almost 8 minutes long;
  • Angel Canales "Bomba Carabomba". Angel Canales is one of my favorites of all time - don't get me wrong! But he's got so many amazing songs that are WAY more danceable to people who aren't snorting cocaine on the dancefloor. Very few dancers, even in NYC, can pull this one off.
  • Every Alfredito Linares song ever. We get it.
  • Horrible, boring instrumental covers of classics like "El cuarto de Tula". (If a cover is boring or adds nothing to the experience, why not just play the awesome original?)
  • All of the above will be generously interspersed with long and repetitive pachangas with no thematic/harmonic development.
  • Supplement the above with long, repetitive, and brutally fast descargas, again with no thematic/harmonic development.
  • And finally, the damned elevator music song from the top of this post. (Can't escape it!!!)
This town badly needs new DJs. Or we need to have the DJ from the Deportivo be invited to take over one of the big socials in mid-town. That guy's sets have the house rocking every time I've gone there, and remind me that, oh yeah - there IS a vibrant salsa culture here. I bet there are some other good DJs playing small clubs/nights uptown that could liven things back up as well. This is New York after all. There's no reason and no excuse for us to not have the best music at our events.

Of all the recurring big socials, Toda la noche, has been more consistently interesting than any other event lately. The playlist there isn't as predictable, except that I know I'll hear music with SABORRR at least for big chunks of the night. The other events? I never know :meh:.

LOL. Did you just come from LVG?

Alegría is DJ La Conga's Anthem. Here you go:

Unfortunately, TLN anniversary celebration last weekend was the worst social I've been to in NY ever. Hopefully that was an exception.

Even LVG?
I was thinkign this exactly at LVG tonight:

  • Supplement the above with long, repetitive, and brutally fast descargas, again with no thematic/harmonic development.
It's simply exhausting to do fast Mambo or Guanguanco one after the other that go into this long Descargas, ad nausea, and for more than half the night. It's excessive. And at that point I welcome Alegria as a respite. Fortunately the pool of dancers tonight was exceptional.

The times I've been to TLN I enjoyed the music, probably the best among the socials. But why was the anniversary so bad?

The music wasn't the issue. It was super packed, and oddly few of the regulars attended. Lead heavy night, which is unusual, and 90% of follows were beginners. The only reason I can think of for this, is that there were other events that night, and that the cover charge was $20 (as opposed to $13). But they didn't have any live bands, so no idea why the added cost.

I think this was a one time thing for the given reasons, should be back to normal next time. Let's hope.

Can I ask what the hate is for Alfredito Linares? I admit that I am in a cultural vacuum in terms of salsa, because I am stuck down in Mississippi, but I do own one Alfredito Linares album (Salsa pa' todo el mundo) and I would say that I enjoy 2/3 of it and the rest is ok. Oddly, the only track I dislike is Mississippi Mambo, and even then I only dislike the vocals/lyrics; the music is fine.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if he is considered bad for some reason? I admit that my musical exploration is kinda all over the map right now.

First Salsa World problems...

The DJs here at the end of the world have some good dura tracks in their playlists, in between playing Monton de Estrellas three times in one social. They're good to dance to the first 10,000 times they play them...

Ha!

Ha! The guy I was next to at lvg let out the biggest groan and started swearing when this came on! Was that you?

Why not drop La Conga a message explaining your objections from a dancers PoV? He's certainly capable of playing different style sets.

I guess its just that the songs "aint no sunshine" and "tiahuanaco" are way overplayed........

I still like both songs alot

Second that.

I'd prefer Allegria over those horrible Bailando covers played here any day...

I had to listen to a half hour playlist of issac delgado
I had to listen to oyelo que te conviene followed by que se sepa
I had to listen to some songs even an artist who is a rumbero said he couldnt dance to them.
I had to listen to willy chirino
I had to listen to johnny vasquez singing - although his voice is nice, he doesnt know when to stop
I threatened to throw my beer in a dj and he came talk to me later kkk
I could go on and on but I guess you got the point..you're fine, dont complain!

Why don't you guys have a DJ exchange programme , you can have maybe DJ Mulato (Paris) for example come over and play his music (it's awesome by the way). We have some awesome DJs on the West Coast you could add them in the mix;). Think outside da box. Maybe Tonio had a bad night. Yes Hatuey is right, even on the West Coast we have it good too.

No hate, it's just that he's somewhat overexposed. Hardcore salseros/mamberos like a bit of variety, there is so much beautiful music out there, that I find it surprising that in NY of all places that the DJs aren't more adventurous with the stuff they play. Try listening to the Noro Morales version of Mississippi Mambo for a different perspective.

Sounds like me hearing Show Me or Black Eyed Peas or So Sick of Love Songs for the billionth time. Before going outside for some fresh air for a few minutes. Glad I'm not the only one!

LOL. Not me, I really do welcome this song as a glass of cold water in a hot desert.

Regarding DJ La Conga he used to play slower music years ago, he's upped the tempo ever since to what is today. Lots of Mambos with long descargas, few Son Montunos, very little Romantica (which is fine with me), may be 5 cha cha cha all night.

I still enjoy LVG, and refrain from telling a DJ what to play. It's his party, his choice. Is up to me to go or not.

I think I've heard Alegría in the UK. Much as I like the FAS, I can live without this tune. Put it this way: it certainly doesn't give me alegría.
