I knew I liked to dance but now I realize I love it.

I started dancing salsa LA style on 1 about 8 months ago and I use to really really enjoy it even with all the frustration of sucking in the begining. 6 months later I got called up and am now in Iraq. The 1st month I would listen to salsa laying on my cot at night with 18 ppl in 1 tent and start thinking about going out and dancing like I would back at home. We spent a month and a half training and living in a FOB getting ready for Iraq and I have to say it was one of the saddest months in my life. One of these reasons is because my grandmother passed away when I was there and I never got to see her I knew she was dying but I never got to go to the funeral or anything. Then later I got to iraq and the 1st thing I looked for was not the dining facitliy or the bunkers but where the list of events for the week were. I found that they had salsa night 1 time a week so my mission that week was to walk to the building I had a hard time finiding to go dance after 2 months of not dancing to relieve some stress. I didnt find it that weekend but I found it the next and started dancing again. Most females here didnt follow well so I though ok I need to do something. So I found a dance partner and trained her for 3 weeks 3 times per week 1 hr a day and 3 weeks later I was having fun again. Thats when I realized I dont like danicng but I love it. The other instructors left this month their time was up so I had my 2nd class this weekend and it was a blast. I just wish they had 2 salsa nights but one is better than nothing but soon im going to see if I can get another one started. The only thing is that the only person I can dance salsa with well is my partner and I miss being at home and being able to dance with all my friends and having tons of fun because they all danced well. approx 8 months left until I go home but until then Im happy with 1 night a week =D. I was reading the forums and read some posts about people having amazing nights dancing and it reminded me of when I 1st started dancing and the 1st night when it just clicked and I danced around 25 songs in 1 night and the great feeling I had in the morning when I woke up and just layed there tired as hell staring at the roof thinking that was the best night I have had in years =D.

First and foremost, Faviles welcome to Salsa Forums. Very happy to have you here with us!

I'm just elated that you have found Salsa where you are currently and you're right, one night a week is better than nothing. Hopefully, you can get another night started soon. Thanks for sharing your story with us and again, welcome! :D

Welcome to sf, Faviles!

Great story and it's already great to hear that you've found yourself a salsa party in that place. And maybe you get the second party started, but at least you've got one which is better then none. So good luck for getting more people into salsa and also good luck to stay safe and healthy while being in Iraq.

That's awesome. My father is actually a MWR (Morale Welfare Recreation) Coordinator in Iraq and he runs salsa nights too. :D I gave him all my salsa, merengue and bachata the last time he was home too.

Hi faviles, welcome to the forum :D

Glad to hear you are at least getting a weekly fix of salsa while you're over there, keep us updated :D

You've got plenty of 'virtual partners' here to share your stories with :D

Thanks Faviles for your service to your country. I'm sure your passion for salsa is a great blessing to those who participate in your classes and salsa nights. Good luck and God bless.

Wow, this must have been a big sacrifice...

(Of course, I'd never assume that the military uses pirated music to keep up the morale.)

Ooooh, do I get a prize? :D

Come over to the Engine Shed on Friday and have a celebratory dance :)

That would indeed be a prize worth having :D but it's our event this Friday so can I take a raincheck? ;)

Sorry for the hijack but when Sweao's offering dances you've just gotta

I knew I liked salsa music, but now I realize I love it. We had a battle of the bands last night with 2 contending bands jamming back and forth. I enjoyed it so much I got teary with happiness.
