Hurt knee - any fixes ?

Last weekend I danced a lot with rubber soles on.

On Monday my left knee was twinging but I went out dancing again. This Friday, I had to stop dancing as my knee was too painful.

Any recommendations for getting back into play ?

I won't be wearing the shoes to salsa again and will rest this week :D

Hi DeeplyDippy,

I haven't ever had knee problems but I had very painful toe and foot problems (in one foot) a while ago. It was weird - my doctor couldn't diagnose the cause, sent me to hospital for an X-ray and they found nothing either - in the end I gave up Salsa for about two months because it was too painful to dance. Then I went back to dancing, dreading what might happen to my foot... and it was fine! Whatever it was had healed itself while I rested.

First port of call is, have your knee investigated by your GP, with referrals to specialists if necessary. But if that doesn't work....I hate to say it, but sometimes rest is the only answer.

Be careful with the Ibuprofen, DD. I know it's a mild one, but many anti-inflammatory drugs have serious side-effects.

You're right, resting from Salsa is hard, but if it comes to a choice between taking a rest or having to give it up altogether..... you know it makes sense!

Hi DD,
after being on danceforum for a while, found out about salsaforums.. saw your post... and hád to answer, so i registered...

please, never ever again put on shoes with rubber soles when you go dancing! as you've noticed, you'll ruin your knee. a friend of mine hasn't been able to dance for 1 year, after continuing dancing with this kneeproblem. from time to time, when she's been dancing on a concrete floor for example, the injury reapears...
salsadancing with all its turns, quick changes in direction etc, puts a lot of twisting strain on your joints (knees and ankles). So it's very important to wear shoes with soles that allow you to rotate on the floor, without too much friction (so, best are leather or suede soles)
i'd say go to your GP, give your knees rest for a coupla days, and then try dancing again, this time with the right shoes...
sometimes a kneeband may help a bit to keep your kneecap in place, and ease the pressure on the joint.
don't use the ibuprofen, coz the pain is a means of your body to say: hold it there, your not treating me right, something is going wrong.
If you use the ibuprofen to not feel the pain, you'll keep damaging your body, and it may become chronic.

good luck

I agree with most of you...but I would suggest using Ibuprofen AFTER dancing. If it hurts I mean. But not before dancing ....beacuse this will stop the alarmsystem.

Point taken about ignoring the pain at my peril.

But, I won't dancing (honest) this week and want to use Ibuprofen as an anti-inflammatory.

You can be sure I won't dance like that again and I may get a tubular bandage for my knee.

well... i actually don't think it is an inflammation (is it called that??)related injury, don't think the ibup. will speed up your healing. but i'm no medic. just be careful of any movement that causes the pain to surface again, like climbing stairs (especialy winding ones)...
hahaha, well, enough good advice, i feel like my mother.... ;)

I'm afraid I don't have any advice for you Deeplydippy, I just popped in to say that I hope your knee gets better soon so that you can get back to your dancin!

And why not? Us mothers are a great source of good advice! At least, that's what we like to think.... ;)

Welcome to SF, Yola! :D

And glad to hear you're being sensible, DD. Hope you're dancing again soon.

as someone who has been on and off crutches for nearly 2 years due to knee problems

REST IT!!! DON'T DANCE WITH RUBBER BOTTOMED SHOES!

I have to have shoe inserts and physio for my knees and I've only been able to start doing things like swimming in the last 6 months and just started dancing 6 weeks ago and I certainly couldn't have done it before.

PLease rest your knees and if you go back and they still hurt - stop straight away.

Ibuprofen is ok if you are in too much pain to concentrate but for the moment you've probably just overstretched a muscle or ligament - if you do carry on dancing on it and move the muscles in the same way (i.e. twisting against the resistance of your shoes) you can do more damage and I can't begin to tell you how painful or frustrating it is when you damage a ligament in a serious way!

Rest it - see how you go and get back on the dancefloor in a couple of weeks and not to mention - buy some new shoes!

Hmmm :(

My knee isn't going to going to get better in a week - I've been resting it from dance, doing exercises to strengthen the muscles around my knee and I've had a tubular bandage on for most of the week.

I've got a new lady who's practicing like crazy to improve her salsa (apparently, she gets nervous dancing with me as there's 5 years of salsa experience difference between us - and I'm happy just dancing with her :D ). A whole new world of Bachata has opened up and I want to teach her.

AND I CAN'T DANCE

:( Grrr, i sympathise, DD... must be frustrating, and yet... take care! have you been to your GP?
maybe you can start wheelchairdancing ;) (that would be something, bachata in a wheelchair... wonder what to do about the hipmovement..haha)

i hope your knee gets better soon dd!

Hi Peach - it's getting there :D

I've been resting it from dance but I have been down the gym, working on strengthening the muscles around the knee. I've also been wearing a tubular bandage - now only at night.

But the biggest improvement came about through walking - when I relax and forget my knee is hurt, then it stretches nicely.

I'm not rushing back to salsa - I'll wait till the end of this week. That's two weeks enforced absence !

Oh good. Looks like you got the right combination to get your knee healed properly. I'm glad you'll be back on the dancefloor soon. :D Not being able to dance is painful enough.
