How do you fix someone who can't stay on rhythm?

You realize that what you'd rather have is much harder for the lead to do, right? It's not like saying "if he only did this simple thing I would be happy." :)

Absolutely! Leaders have a hard job. I tried learning to lead and gave up. :)

Now here's a random story that may prove my point a bit better (that some guys do have a choice between throwing down crazy moves the entire dance and just leading simple stuff very well): a few weeks ago, I had a wound on my foot right where my dance shoe strap hit. I changed into flats (street shoes) and eventually decided to just leave because of the pain. But one of the regulars arrived and told me I was not leaving without dancing with him.

He's, shall we say, an energetic lead with a lot of moves under his belt (although notorious for rushing the timing) and loves to dip his partners. So I told him I was in extreme pain, was wearing street shoes and could only do very basic stuff. And it was the BEST dance I've ever had with him. He lead everything perfectly, eased me through everything, did only the simplest moves and we played around with lots of shines and body movement. My friends applauded after the dance. And I thought to myself, "Dude, why can't you just do this all the time?? Or at least half of a dance?"

Try telling him in a gentle way? He probably isn't even aware of his terrible PMA (pattern monkey affliction), poor guy!
