How did you find out what clothing works for you?

I checked out a new ballroom last night and had a really good time. The only problem is that I wore a new top and I was flashing guys...all...night. So yeah...not wearing that one anymore. I'm looking into dancing in skirts too since jeans get so hot, but the last thing I want is to start a whole knew flashing issue. I also feel like they look strange in low heels, but I like showing off my legs.

I know everyone's body has their own issues, so how did you find which types of clothing works best for you? Is it trial and error? Right now, I'm in jeans with a little stretch and all different kinds of tops...none of which work yet.

***a little addition if anyone has any personalized tips or similar issues...I'm 6' tall, short waist, long legs and a rather large chest.

I don't see a problem here! (I know...typical guy.) 8)

But seriously, I know what you mean with all the tribulations my girlfriend goes through to find the "right thing" every week.

I really like the skirt thing for dancing. I'm not a skirt person in general, but jeans just feel awful in a hot dance venue. (Only thing is I can't wear them with my beloved jazz shoes... but if you are tall with nice legs you might pull that look off though.)

I have a couple of silky-looking poly-blend knee-length skirts that fit closely enough not to twirl up in spins but are plenty stretchy for movement. Those are pretty good. One was from Express and the other from Strawberry (not places I would normally buy clothing but they work for salsa). In a dress with a more flared skirt I just put a pair of shortish bike shorts underneath.

What kind of tops are you wearing that don't work? I just always wear a tank top. They don't flash, restrict, bind, or overheat. I've got a bunch in different colors and levels of dressiness.

I haven't gotten into tanks much because I don't like my upper arms...but they're getting into better shape. For the most part I wear midlength, open sleeved tops with low-cut fronts (hence the flashing issue). For bottoms, I'm always wearing jeans with some stretch...the worst problem they pose is slipping down a little while dancing. I swear, every top I have either rides or opens up while dancing except for a couple of very close fitting ones, but they look very...clubbish and I'm looking for a more sexy/sophisticated look.

I dunno, I go for comfort/utility over appearance for salsa clothing, but it doesn't sound like you're playing up your assets at all. Nice legs + full chest should = sexy skirt and modest top, no?

At 6' tall, I imagine you would be fine in flats or low heels with a skirt. Some skirts even look better with flats - e.g., a shortish (mid to lower thigh) straight skirt looks great with sneakers/ballerina flats/jazz shoes/kitten heels/cuban heels if you have the legs to pull it off (and it won't twirl up in spins, but you could get some Spanx to be extra careful). Mid-calf skirts can look nice with flats too but aren't so great for dancing - too much fabric gets in the way.

And if you are worried about flashing people, why don't you try a higher-cut top? If you are wearing a skirt, a very plain/casual top (like a close-fitting V-neck or boat-neck tee) can still look nice enough for an evening out. (Plus if you do go the short skirt route, a low-cut top might be overkill.)

Thanks noobster! This is honestly the first time I've ever had a...wardrobe malfunction (sorry...couldn't help it). It's just a matter of me finding tops that aren't too matronly but still keep me covered through all that moving. I'm thinking of just going with a dressy short and calling it a day...

Whenever you are out shopping for new salsa clothes, try your fastest spin and make sure you aren't flashing your goods! If you want to stick with skirts, try the sexy straight ones that don't flare. If you want flare, get a pair of boy shorts to wear under the skirt. As fare as tops go....I usally stick with varieties of halters and spaghetti straps..just make sure they don't v or scoop down to far! Remember...try your fastest spin!

Hope this helps,
Danielle

I bought a new top the other day which I thought would be fine, but it kept shifting as I was dancing which was very annoying and I kept worrying that it would shift too much and as you say Esa negrita flash what I wanted to keep hidden. lol

With skirts I do the same as Salsera-Danij and do one of my fastest spins, it helps if you have a friend to check from a sitting down angle (because obviously people sitting down in a club will have a different view of the people on the dancefloor) that you're not displaying what you don't want displayed :D

Hey

as a few girls have mentioned boy shorts knickers under skirts are the solution to the spinning skirt flaring up issue and to be honest, unless you are getting dipped even when you spin most skirts don't actually flare up that high even though they feel like they are - thus flashing shouldn't be that much of a problem

on the top issue...what about cute/sexy t-shirts (keep the chest covered that way, would cover your arms a bit also) but still sexy?
have you looked into halternecks i have largeish chest also , and they (if elasticated) work very well i've discovered adn are quite flattering on not perfect arms

also - hollywood /double sided sticky tape, tape your top down to your chest sot aht you can still wear the low cut top (you may aswell flaunt it if you have it!!) and then you wont be er...exposed :)
I used it for performance worked well keeping me from flashing too much!

Also denim mini skirts work quite well for dancing and no flare issues, get short ones :)

What problems you have!! I wish I had big chest/long leg problems. But I can totally relate, just with different areas.

Anyway, when in doubt - don't wear it, but yes, mostly you'll lean trial-and-error (when you didn't doubt it).

My jeans will slide down too, so I always wear a belt, even if it's a small one that's not that visible. I also like to wear the tops that are really long (hip-length) so they don't ride up and they tend to keep my jeans in place.

Skirts- if you're looking for a sophisticated & non-flashing approach, then go with knee length. I don't get how girls are wearing mini-skirts to dance. While they may look really cute, I always see them tugging at them, which doesn't look very cute at all. So a nice flairy or pencil knee-lenthg skirt: sexy and practical.

And please, no tube tops!!! I made that mistake once - never again..Very embarrassing experience.

How about a dolman-sleeve top? These flare out nicely when you spin. I just discovered these and bought a couple.

Also, I just bought a bra with a clear strap in the back so I can wear open back shirts. This would look gorgeous on you, Esa... Show off your legs in a cute skirt, and show off your back. :)

Just suggestions! I hope you find some clothes that work better for you.

LOL! No one has gotten caught in my sleeves.... YET. Haha. I hope it won't happen. We'll see, I'm going to wear one this friday. :)

this comes from a guy point of view, but for me is trail and error at home, I put some cool clothes, stand in the mirror and go through the range of motions that I will be doing in the dance floor, for a girl flashing proofing your clothes ( under your main top, a short tank tops, hot pants, etc) goes along way in giving you and your partner the tranquility to dance without worrying about it. Sometimes I have dance with girls that had skirts that in a double turn go flying all around, it was a bit annoying actually as I would spend the dance working on not getting her expose rather than dancing.

that is why I prefer ladies in jeans or skits/shorts. tanks tops are also quite the issue if they keep falling down, once I danced with a friend who had to spend 70% of the dance raising her falling top.

salsita where did you found them, they look beautifull

The first shirt I got from Ebay but it's from a store called Arden B. They have an online store, too.
The third shirt (the open back one) is also by Arden B and I just got it in the mail today! yay! I bought it from their online store. I can't wait to wear it. :D

The shirt in the middle is from Wet Seal. They have stores in malls and they also have an online store.

I used to be into wearing reaaaaally low cut shirts and tube tops, etc... but seriously I'd spend my whole night worrying about my shirt falling down. So I'm done with that. Unless I'm SURE the shirt is secure!

It's so much easier to get into the music and dance when you aren't stressed over your outfit and tugging on everything.
