I'm curious about what gets played in different scenes. Which musicians are popular with DJs at your local haunt? Which musicians are not? Which ones make you go "Who's that?"

This is not about who YOU like - rather it's about who's hot or not in your local scene. Disclosure of location of the venue would be useful but not necessary.

List of Artists... (writing hot or not or who for each artist would be appreciated - additional comments welcome of course)

[caveat - I do realize that this list would be considered very long for some while too short for others.]
 
The problem I would have with completing this list is that I don't always know who I'm dancing to even if I have heard it a dozen times. The ones I do know are those that I like because I have asked the DJ so you would get a biased list back from me..... the ones I like which is not what you are looking for

BUT-- in all fairness ( even tho I dont get it ) what people prefer is true for ALL of us.

I,m more curious to know where you are hearing some of these songs played ?
 
City of <120,000 with 5 active Salsa venues as of this week (fluctuated between 3-5 venues for past 3 years)… Salsa venues open 7 days a week (as low as 4 days/week in past 3 years - mostly at 6 days/week with a couple of nights with competitions for past 2 years)… There were ~9 active DJs over past year or so - I hear 3 of them on regular basis and know the style for another 3 reasonably well (although in 1 case, I know well enough to know that I'm unfamiliar with most of his stuff except for an occasional Chivirico Davila here and Cheo Feliciano there, etc).

For past 3-4 months, I've been going out 2-3 days/week locally... closer to 2 than 3...

Adolescents Orquesta -- never heard them played - I know at least one DJ with their stuff
Africando -- not as popular as before but several DJs liable to play them
Angel Canales -- getting some play lately by a couple of DJs
Cal Tjader -- once in a blue moon by 2-3 DJs
Eddie Palmieri -- a little less than once a week … 2-3 DJs
Frankie Ruiz -- several DJs… was down for a while… back to ~1/week for now
Gloria Estefan -- fairly popular ~2 years ago… everyone except 1 avoids it now
Grupo Niche -- up and down (did not get played for several months)… several DJs
Henry Fiol -- 1 DJ … occasionally
Jose Alberto -- 1 DJ … fairly consistently every week as of late
Lebron Brothers -- 2-3 DJs … seems to be on a upswing lately
Marc Anthony -- most DJs …. usually no more than 1 / night
Santiago Ceron -- 1 DJ … some weeks yes some weeks no
Sonora Carruseles -- way less than in the past - once every three weeks or so?
Sonora Poncena -- 1 DJ … probably more than once a month…
Tito Puente -- 2-3 DJs … once a week…
Tito Rodriguez -- 2 DJs … as often as 3/night… sometimes none… ~1/week
Willie Colon -- 2 DJs mostly… a little over once a week sounds about right
Willie Rosario -- 2 DJs … once a week … maybe more

Obviously this is not an exhaustive list of what gets played here - not that I'd recognize all of the songs/artists although I'm getting pretty good…

As for hot/not/who, I personally like (some) stuff from all of them except I don't really listen to Adolescents and not for quite some time to Gloria Estefan.

Speaking for the scene as whole in my estimation, Marc Anthony probably has the broadest fan base here - I only have 1 of his songs in my collection though (of >3000 songs labelled Latin in my iPod). Henry Fiol and Santiago Ceron probably will be least familiar to most -- maybe Sonora Poncena too. No one seems to have strong feelings about Jose Alberto. Everyone else has varying size of fan base (as small as 1 person and for 1 song by an artist - not counting myself).
