hints or resources to identify different "salsa" s

im having trouble recognizing styles such as

mambo
guaguanco
guaracha
chacha (from a slow salsa)
from "salsa" (and even colombian, portorican, cuban, sometimes i'm not sure), and even cumbia sometimes (!)

on a formal point of view, not just "feels like this or that", but musical definitions : what instruments play what for it to be mambo or guaguanco

if you have hints, or links to existing resources, thanks in advance.

Go to the video section under genres. Hopefully some of the excellent members here can join in and give you an idea via video clips.

Definitions

For online definitions you could go to:
http://www. descarga.com/cgi-bin/db/glossary?cr2sfDEE;;7

For offline (old fashioned books) I recommend:
Helio Orovio, Cuban Music from A toZ (for the Cuban genres)

Not sure where to go for the other stuff.

You'll find under cuban definition the guaguanco is an african dance danced to african rhythms... which is different than the guaguanco played in the states. The African Guaguanco in Cuba is almost like the Bomba of Puerto Rico. In Cuba they dance to the drum, while in Puerto Rico the drum dances to us.

But if you want some information to look up try this site.

You won't get lost nor will it bore you.

Let me guess... you don't work in advertising :-)

Come to Cuba! Most visitors don't get food poisoning!

Hong Kong! Come outside of typhoon season!

Come to England! If you're lucky it IS possible to get good food!

I was referring to people who might not like to read long journals or find a dictionary that lacks indepth info online. That site makes reading fun for some people.

Been to Hong Kong/Asia

Cuba is on the US Political blacklist (shame on them), but I've met and known many Cuban musicians before the VIP sections were implemented at Latin Night Clubs, so I'm not missing much in terms of needing to go on a trip for a "Cuban Experience". Been to a house santo-party with Beny More's daughter present in Manhattan. In fact it was when Larry Harlow's wife #2, Rita made Santo....when the Cubans were living there and ran the bars and clubs on Amsterdam Avenue; Now that was a great time in terms of bar hopping on Amsterdam. Every club and bar was like the old jazz clubs with lots of talent. I've been backstage when La Lupe was getting ready to perfrom live at the Village Gate. Now where's that pic of mine dancing with Jose Fajardo at Casablanca in NY? I could go on... yadda yadda.

I have a long over due invite to England. One of these days.
