High pitch and old age

I've always liked horns. I wanted to play them as a kid, but due to being born in totalitarian regime, I had to settle for woodwinds. The raw power of horn section, makes ska, funk, salsa, and many other genres powerful and drives people to dance. I always felt that band has more power, if they have good horns.

In last few years I observed that I start to prefer salsa with trombones. I thought I'm following the times with bands like Tromboranga. Or that my taste is changing.

But now I notice that I start to avoid trumpets. Too much of them and it starts hurting. What's next? I'm afraid I'll start skipping guajiras with flutes, which I love. It might me painful to hear if this trend continues.

I wonder if the neural system being worn down due to calamities accumulated during life. And pain threshold is changing?

From another perspective one should hear less and less high frequency sounds as they get older. Shouldn't this cancel out?
Those who are not aware of this phenomena can check it out at this webpage.

http://onlinetonegenerator.com/hearingtest.html (For me after 10kHz for me volume starts falling rapidly, and I don't hear after 13kHz, unless I crank volume up to max and then it's unclear).

I'd like to hear of experiences from folks here who are older than sixteen. Also musicians and DJs who have damaged their hearing after years of abuse.

Do you tend to play/listen more music with higher pitches over time (flutes, violins, trumpets, cymbals), because you don't hear it? Jazz drummers have that tendency as they age, they use cymbals more, because they don't hear them.
Do you start to avoid it, because there is enough excitement in your life?
Does it even matter to you?

High pitched strings are more painful now than they used to be, and my tolerance for high volume has diminished over time.
On the other hand, I can still listen to Irakere's brass section in full power and love it.

Interesting you mention: There is a house nearby who has one of this high pitch sounds to keep martens and other animals away... I read that in some places they also put them so teenagers don't hang out there...
Whenever we pass it, my son hates it and tells me if we can walk faster. And I don't hear anything!
Yesterday we checked from how far he could still hear it, and these sounds reach far!

This is probably just one of the millions of excuses drummer have to keep playing loud.
Specially convincing when they take out their earplugs after saying that.

Bad times to ask that... :)

Yes, they did this in US at shoppingmall entrances, so that teenagers wouldn't hang out there, if I recall correctly. Terrible!
Also dogs for example have higher hearing range than humans and they suffer from these devices.

It's really strange standing there and knowing I don't hear something that a person besides me is hearing.
