Has anyone been to Funchal?

By that I mean anyone here at SF. Planning a trip but I have no idea what is the best part of town to stay in in terms of being walking distance to ocean and whatever sights the town has. I can see on expedia where the hotels are located but the names of the ares of town don't mean anything to me.

Couchsurfing is a good site to make contacts. You can join up and get info on different places and meet people. Tripadvisor is also another good site for working out where to go..... I found the restaurant section very useful!
