Going Viral: Omar Soriano demonstrates Salsa on the Chromatone (this is the real thing, now!)

ok everybody, this is it!

A month or so ago, a few of you were kind enough to give me feedback on a screentest I did of myself playing Salsa on the Chromatone. I've used that feedback to create this more professional video of me demonstrating the potential of the Chromatone by playing my best Salsa and Latin Jazz chops (to date) .

Enjoy!

With alot of hard work, I put this video together with the intention of bringing awareness to the instrument. I really want as many people as possible to see this. So I'm asking as many people as possible to post links to this video wherever it is that you post normally: forums you visit, on the walls of friends on Facebook, etc. Let's see if we can get a viral buzz around this video.

Thanks for rallying around the cause :)

Glad to see you wore the shades and leather jacket :)

I actually dislike the louder piano version, because that isn't how Salsa records are mixed, and I don't feel the piano blends as nicely. But I got four complaints last night that they piano wasn't loud enough. One guy in Colombia even said he wouldnt evaluate it until the piano part was turned up, which I thought was snobbish.

Anywhere, there is the second version, aiming to please. I'm very much hating the fact that the volume issue is distracting from people actually discussing the instrument and the performance. This is supposed to be the "coming out party" for this instrument.

My observation ( not a complaint ) in the first video was that the backing track was overwhelming the chromatone, which is the feature here, no? I was straining a bit to hear what you were playing on the chromatone, that's all. It's your show so you should go with what you want to project and as always, best of luck and much success in your musical endeavors. Party on!

I liked both versions. What in the world instrument is that? Research time!!

You dont have to go far...there's a thread on this forum dedicated to the instrument.

Thanks for the listen. If you're really feeling it, can you post links wherever you normally post stuff you like? I'd be appreciative.

Pop quiz: how many Jazz progressions can you spot in this piece?

6 or 7? Actually, except for a few brief 1-4-5 montunos it is mostly "jazzy" to me. You even managed to fit in a blues and an autumn leaves progression. That vamp on one chord at 3:07 playing a blues scale is also jazzy. Good work harmonically but I feel sorry for the bass player lol

You even managed to fit in a blues

Yup

and an autumn leaves progressions

Nope :P

There are a few IIm V7 Imaj7's though

When I am at my bluesiest, like at 3:09 onward, the bass just needs to hover around Im7, in this case Am7. I'm not at a place yet where i can improvise over anything but the simplest changes (I still rely on the Blues scale mostly and not quite ready for hitting guidetones and stuff.

Question: can you tell when I am actually improvising and when I am playing something from rote?

Anyway, as far as progressions, I think the biggest easter egg I threw in there was, at 0:34 onward:

| Ebmaj7 | Bbm7 Eb7 | Abmaj7 | Abm7 Db7 | = sometimes referred to as "To IV n Yak"

+

| Ebmaj7 C7 | Fm7 Bb7 | Ebmaj7 | = Plain Old Turnaround

= The "Misty" opening 8

bazinga!

I already did. Of course I only post about one a week to FB but hopefully my friends will check it out.

my bad. 2:47 - 3:05 sounded like a cycle of fourths ii-V-I-IV-vii-iii-vi ( autumn leaves )

duuuudeeee...you're right. I hadn't thought of it that way.

To mind I was just playing through the B section of "El Cantante" except in C instead of whatever the original key is.

So there we go, we've found another song that uses the Autumn Leaves changes
