the type of people who do that, tend also to be the type of people who do the other delay thingy whilst social dancing.
Ah yeah, the old "well, I can do 23 spins over 7,8,1,2,3,4,5 so why start a double before 4&?" thing.

Could be a long post so if you don't want to read the whole thing here's the summary in one short sentence. IT WAS GREAT!
I wish I had someone like AndrewS to encourage me asking Burju and Isabel(James Cobo's partner).I also had the pleasure of encouraging a friend to ask Milton Cobo to dance.
It's great to have detailed reviews on Salsa parties or events, and this one is clearly written.Could be a long post so if you don't want to read the whole thing here's the summary in one short sentence. IT WAS GREAT!!!
Now in more detail, with gripes and praise where appropriate.
I've danced with the Santo Rico girls before, and I've even been rejected by some of them a couple of times. Even while we were dancing and I was trying to smile and be/look friendly, there was a look of disinterest and boredom on their faces. Compare that to the megawatt smiles of Ahtoy and Burju whom I had the lovely pleasure of leading at GBSEx.
I try to put it down to their unique 'Santo Rico' look while dancing, but the memory of it somehow rankles. It may, I theorise, also be due to the fact that I'm Asian, because I've seen them look alright most times when dancing with leads of other races. Then again I might be thinking too much. But I never ask any of them to dance nowadays.
I still very much enjoy watching their shows and social dances though!
Narcosis, the "far away" look was something I got too and I think it was probably because I only led double and triple spins and they are used to 6 or 7 so I expect they had just disengaged their brain and were not too interested in the dance.
Anyhow, I had plenty of good dances with non-performers in both rooms so the uninterested partners were too few to worry about.
Don't take it personal. Even in NYC, many in the SR crew are seen as what we say here "feeling themselves." I doubt it was a racial thing because there are great Asian dancers in NYC that the regularly dance with.
Greetings from Bulgaria
Almost 100% agree.
Also, the fact that I have spent the past two months prior to the event in the gloomy town of Sheffield, where the salsa life is reduced to one evening a month deffinitely adds up to the charm of the event.
As far as the workshops are concerned -
Yamulee - a bit of a mess.
Cobo Bothers(Turn patterns with styling on2)
I missed Cobo brothers workshops on 2007 UK Salsa Congress and decided that I should go to this one. My very first impression was that actually I can't dance. Not on 1 or on 2. On nothing! On second thought I must say that the workshop was very well organized, and somehow inspiring at least for me!
Parties
All I can say is that I can't possibly ask for more.
I am beginning to appreciate the GBSex parties now, when I got back to Bulgaria for my Christmas break. Wonderful music and excelent venue, especially compared to the club I visited yesterday, where I had to spend some time with my back on the wall waiting for the DJ to play something danceable(I have never been happier to hear an El Gran Combo track, even though it was not among my the ones I like a lot).
I wish I had someone like AndrewS to encourage me asking Burju and Isabel(James Cobo's partner).

SR is actually known for starting their spins early. At the PR Congress several years ago (1999?) they started this in one of their performances, which is why they are able to get so many spins off.
Its amazing how some dancers are poor at transitioning from the performance mode to the social dance mode.
Can I point out that Ahoty was a Santo Rico girl. This points out the fact that every girl will have her own personality and her own issues. I don't like dancing with all the SR girls for the same reasons you've mentioned (some I refuse to dance with), but there are others that I consider my favorite follows in the city. These wide sweaping generalities are absurd for whatever school you're talking about...
btw, consider yourself lucky, Ahtoy rarely goes out socially, which is truly a shame
With Ahtoy, Carol Flores, Burju, Diana, Erin and Isabel (the other Cobo) there were a lot more smiles and they put more into the dance.
AndrewS,
You lucky lucky bugger...lol. You had an allstar lineup of followers there and I am glad you had fun.... I think over time you get to know that these girls all have their own issues. Some are going to be nice while some are not. That's just life....
Especially with at least 50% of the stars spending the entire Friday evening 'hiding' behind the reserved area barrier and socialising exclusively with each other.
Just revisiting this thread as I've found out tickets for this year's event go on sale tomorrow
I am starting to realise how lucky I was in Manchester to get to dance with so many of these stars. Zurich last month proved to be a much trickier prospect. Especially with at least 50% of the stars spending the entire Friday evening 'hiding' behind the reserved area barrier and socialising exclusively with each other.
I can post a review of my experience of Zurich if anybody's interested in it
