GBSex + workshops by Santo Rico, Yamulee, Cobo Brothers, Leon Rose, Brian & Mechteld

Could be a long post so if you don't want to read the whole thing here's the summary in one short sentence. IT WAS GREAT!

Greetings from Bulgaria
Almost 100% agree.
Also, the fact that I have spent the past two months prior to the event in the gloomy town of Sheffield, where the salsa life is reduced to one evening a month deffinitely adds up to the charm of the event.
As far as the workshops are concerned -
Yamulee - a bit of a mess.

Cobo Bothers(Turn patterns with styling on2)
I missed Cobo brothers workshops on 2007 UK Salsa Congress and decided that I should go to this one. My very first impression was that actually I can't dance:D. Not on 1 or on 2. On nothing! On second thought I must say that the workshop was very well organized, and somehow inspiring at least for me!

Parties
All I can say is that I can't possibly ask for more.
I am beginning to appreciate the GBSex parties now, when I got back to Bulgaria for my Christmas break. Wonderful music and excelent venue, especially compared to the club I visited yesterday, where I had to spend some time with my back on the wall waiting for the DJ to play something danceable(I have never been happier to hear an El Gran Combo track, even though it was not among my the ones I like a lot).

I also had the pleasure of encouraging a friend to ask Milton Cobo to dance.
I wish I had someone like AndrewS to encourage me asking Burju and Isabel(James Cobo's partner).

Now in more detail, with gripes and praise where appropriate.
It's great to have detailed reviews on Salsa parties or events, and this one is clearly written.

May I add as a little reminder for the reader from the future (hey maybe in five or ten years) who will find this thread and may wonder about the event:

"GBSEx 2008" - The Great British Salsa Experience
From Fri 21 to Sun 23 Nov 2008
Manchester Town Hall (Albert Square, Manchester, UK, M2 5DB)

I've danced with the Santo Rico girls before, and I've even been rejected by some of them a couple of times. Even while we were dancing and I was trying to smile and be/look friendly, there was a look of disinterest and boredom on their faces. Compare that to the megawatt smiles of Ahtoy and Burju whom I had the lovely pleasure of leading at GBSEx.

I try to put it down to their unique 'Santo Rico' look while dancing, but the memory of it somehow rankles. It may, I theorise, also be due to the fact that I'm Asian, because I've seen them look alright most times when dancing with leads of other races. Then again I might be thinking too much. But I never ask any of them to dance nowadays.

I still very much enjoy watching their shows and social dances though!

Don't take it personal. Even in NYC, many in the SR crew are seen as what we say here "feeling themselves." I doubt it was a racial thing because there are great Asian dancers in NYC that the regularly dance with.

Narcosis, the "far away" look was something I got too and I think it was probably because I only led double and triple spins and they are used to 6 or 7 so I expect they had just disengaged their brain and were not too interested in the dance.

This is a general issue with SR girls. The turn patterns they teach and their performances are based around multiples. Plus, they encourage multiples because of the spinning method they "invented."

Nah I've dusted it off some while ago, rest assured. :)

On another note, I've watched Susanna, Leon and Inaki's <A Man's World> performance three times over two years, and I never get tired of it. Love it everytime I watch it. :)

Hi and welcome. Great first post. Thanks

Now I really REALLY wish I had been there (although going to Manchester that weekend would have been sheer madness)... :(

Now GBSEx is on my list of "must attend next year" congresses. I think I'll book everything well in advance too :)

Can I point out that Ahoty was a Santo Rico girl. This points out the fact that every girl will have her own personality and her own issues. I don't like dancing with all the SR girls for the same reasons you've mentioned (some I refuse to dance with), but there are others that I consider my favorite follows in the city. These wide sweaping generalities are absurd for whatever school you're talking about...

btw, consider yourself lucky, Ahtoy rarely goes out socially, which is truly a shame

SR is actually known for starting their spins early. At the PR Congress several years ago (1999?) they started this in one of their performances, which is why they are able to get so many spins off.

That right there is ridiculous. The reason they get so many spins off isn't because they start the rotations before 1, it's because they have developed a technique that maximizes the efficiency of both partners to most effectively spin and do it at pace. I don't know what the school taught you in 1999, but it's not what I at least personaly know from Santo Rico. Spins start at 1, end at latest 4 and give them at least a 6, 7. In fact if anything they drill girls to stop completely on 3 cleanly with complete control and do a full 5,6,7.

Its amazing how some dancers are poor at transitioning from the performance mode to the social dance mode.

Maybe they aren't able to. Even some of the Santo Rico chicks have their following issues, at least in advanced patterns that test their ability to react to momentum changes and things that aren't expected. I generally find them able to follow almost anything I lead, but I'm not at an advanced enough level to require the kind of craziness that their top guys can lead.

You're also assuming that they want to dance with guys who know them as the "girls that spin." At one point it gets annoying to constantly be under people's test and have to prove themselves to every guy who thinks that they all of a sudden have the ability to put girls through quads in 3 beats. Few can, and most just blend into 567, don't give them the resistance they need for the cross body, but expect them to be where they think they want them for the next mislead pattern. Being Santo Rico comes with expectations, for both their leads and their follows, and while the leads don't necessarily have to show it all the time, the follows have no choice. They are required to do whatever ridiculous pattern some guy wants to do that he's never tried before and thinks he finally has the shot at attempting.

True, I did make a general statement. Perhaps I should have stated the current Santo Rico team girls? I'm not too sure how many girls there are in total, but I refer to the 3 girls whom I always see at different congresses and festivals. Still, I must say again no hard feelings at all.

And indeed I'm lucky to have danced with Ahtoy, I know! Glad for that dance :)

AndrewS,

You lucky lucky bugger...lol. You had an allstar lineup of followers there and I am glad you had fun.... I think over time you get to know that these girls all have their own issues. Some are going to be nice while some are not. That's just life....

With Ahtoy, Carol Flores, Burju, Diana, Erin and Isabel (the other Cobo) there were a lot more smiles and they put more into the dance.

Just revisiting this thread as I've found out tickets for this year's event go on sale tomorrow :)

I am starting to realise how lucky I was in Manchester to get to dance with so many of these stars. Zurich last month proved to be a much trickier prospect. Especially with at least 50% of the stars spending the entire Friday evening 'hiding' behind the reserved area barrier and socialising exclusively with each other.

I can post a review of my experience of Zurich if anybody's interested in it

This is becomming more common now and, especially, amongst the dark glasses wearing crowd. I can't blame them cause 1) it is often very hot at Euro venues and unlike in the USA many venues don't offer free water, but there are drinks and snacks in the Greenroom 2) it helps them maintain that air of superstardom 3) some are board with dancing with average dancers and get bombarded when they come out of the performers space 4) for the guys its often easier for them to take the salsa groupies in the back, grab a few drinks and maybe do some stuff that can be done in public (after all, it IS called GB Sex)... just to name a few.
