Frustrated from last night... :-(

Okay we've got a "buzzing from last night..." thread, but I need a thread to vent after a not-so-great night of dancing :(

Last night I went to Salsa Caribe, my usual Tuesday venue. When I put my shoes on I felt the left shoe was a bit uncomfortable, but I assumed it was the gel insole not quite in the right place. After a couple of dances I felt I was really off, and the left shoe was annoying me, so I decided to sit a song out and adjust the shoe. That's when I found that it was coming apart - on the outside of the shoe, the vamp wing had detached from between the outsole and insole. Since it was a closed-toe shoe, my foot just about stayed in the shoe held by the straps and the toe box, but my foot was constantly trying to slide out to the side. I stayed at the club for maybe 1 1/2 hours, but didn't get even one good dance. :( :( :( I was quite surprised how the left shoe problem also affected my right spins. :?

Lesson 1: Check the condition of your shoes before you leave.
Lesson 2: Always take two pairs of shoes just in case.
Lesson 3: It's time to buy a new pair of shoes...

I hope I'll have a better night tonight.

A SF regular and you don't carry an extra pair ? :P

That sounded like a salsa club in Tokyo. I then noticed your location and it is indeed Tokyo. I haven't danced in many cities, but I love the Tokyo scene. One of most friendly and welcoming places. If I remember correctly Tuesday sees many on2 dancers at Caribe?

Yes it's indeed Salsa Caribe in Tokyo. Tuesday's more on1 now because they have on1 classes - maybe they've had a change of teachers since you were here last. Mondays and Wednesdays are more on2. I'd better get ready and go now... :car:

I didn't have a good night either. Last week it was the weather so I just left after only half an hour, so I guess I had highere expectations for tonight...no go...I'm going to be checking out other dances to see if I get more people to dance with...

Had a BAD night last night. Went out without eating and within an hour my stomach was complaining. Not only could I not enjoy the great music. For some reason every woman looked like someone who either wouldn't enjoy dancing with me or I wouldn't enjoy dancing with so didn't ask. So much for not pre-judging. Rubbish, just rubbish!!! Even so, there were a couple enjoyable dances to remember. I new I should have had that Tortilloni before going out.

Never leave home on an empty stomach. Even if you fill it with banana milkshake it won't last and you'll end up fantasizing about variety box chicken meals instead of asking lovely Salseras to dance. :P

I must have looked like such an ar*e sitting out on so many songs, watching people dance all night. Thankfully this has only happened a few times (from what I remember) in the last year. Time to swap the "Just for fun" hat in favour of the "Serious about Salsa" hat again and get back into the spirit of improvement.

This is a very good read relating to the ask don't ask dilema:

My worst nights were back in the beginning when I would either always end up at a sausage-fest night (these nights stand out since they seem to last the longest, haha), or nights when I would simply be too shy to ask any female to dance.

Time to start thinking of beer as a food! :)

It's so normal to have some "less than ideal" nights, and it's part of the growth process. While your night related to equipment, I've had poor nights from low blood sugar (I didn't eat properly), not enough sleep, too many great leads around me (making me feel like a loser on a given night, even if nobody else cares...), my own bad attitude (for a hundred reasons), or something else that just didn't work that night.

You have it right... things will be better the next night and assuming we don't quit, the fun will be back.

A hard lesson for me to learn was not feeling bad about myself on weak nights. Everybody has them, and no matter how strong we become, we'll still have "just OK" nights because our standards raise over time.

Some nights I fight it, staying and hoping to get some good dances before leaving. Most of the time I don't get bothered, but leave earlier and reset for tomorrow.

An occasionally bad night is just part of the process, You have a great attitude, and the right attitude about simply moving on.

I'm sure you know this, but just to confirm your suspicions...having a bad night is usually mostly dependent on YOUR mood and state of mind, not the venue, music, availability of dancers, etc. And I'm saying this as a capricious, judgemental, PMS-ing female. As for eating before dancing - I never have dinner, because if I dance on a full stomach I getty really nauseated. But I often also get really dizzy without eating after about an hour of dancing, and have to go around searching for alcohol-free carbs (not an easy task in a dance club). So my new resolution is to bring energy bars with me, and take a snack break during a merengue :)

Agree 100% and it works for guys too :)

There is such a correlation between my worst nights and EXPECTATIONS. Usually now I can catch myself when I start to get frustrated, and mentally "give up" on the night. Things often improve after that.

I also believe that the last night of congresses are the best, for this reason. Friday night everyone is really excited and focussing on meeting people and I dunno, putting a stamp on their territory or something, Saturday night everyone's DETERMINED to have a party and also to try out that day's new moves. Sunday, everyone's absolutely zonked, and maybe a little melancholy, and there's more space on the floor. I've only been to very few sizeable congresses, but Sunday has been the reliable best night.

Ditto! The night would have been average had it not been for the rumbling belly and survival mode instincts distorting reality. Kinda glad there were no dear running around, it could have got messy! "Come here little dear...heeeere little dear". Hmm, sorry vegetarians. That was crude.

I like the beer as food idea, though I'd probably substitute it for Guinness. MMmmmm.

I'm quite the opposite. If I have more than the slightest snack before going out dancing, I'm prone to sit on the side of the floor, feeling full and lethargic.

By the way, bad nights for me tend to happen when I'm just a bit too tired.

I think I've developed a problem when dancing with really advanced, technical and quick follows...

Since it is not every day I get the chance to do this I get caught a bit of guard and my "usual repertoire" feel a bit odd...I get the feeling that there is suddenly enormous portions of extra time that are screaming to be filled with other things and hence makes the dance feel "empty" and unsatisfying.

Sadly these dances are not as enjoyable as others...last time this happened was with Burju (Hacha Y Machete) and I just hate the fact that I can't *really* enjoy a dance with a very advanced follow....

Maybe it's mostly in my head...dunno...anyone else experiencing something similar? It's a kinda hard to cure problem...
