Football: World Cup 2014

Well, they have projected that some 3.2 billion people will watch at least some of the games. That's basically everyone with access to a TV, or something. In any event, it's going to be a wonderfull gathering of everyone in the world, no matter who wins.

As a neutral (can't handle the pressure /stress of being an England supporter). hoping for a incident free world cup and a Brazil V Argentina final!!!

Ive been watching a Docum on TV in the UK, of 2 comedians ( both football fanatics ) who have travelled to all the S. American countries that are playing in the Cup.

They finished their tour in Brasil ,and had Carlos Alberto as a guest. He picked Spain as a likely winner.
They did interviews over the past few weeks,in all the cities they toured, with many of the retired icons from past world cup series .

My prediction - lots of self obsessed young millionaires with pretty haircuts rolling around on the ground like petulant toddlers and screaming at the referees.

Yes, this is the main reason I can't bare to watch football most of the time. Don't tell me it's part of the game, a game like that should not exist. But yes, I'll watch a few games on the world cup. That's the only exception to the rule ;)

Just looked at the team list and am in shock--what in the world is the US "soccer team" doing there..? o_O

I would not underestimate any team in this competition......" on any given Sunday, etc " After all the US beat the english team 1 -0 , who were pretty much supreme in 1950 ..There are invariably shockers in the series .Brazil losing to Uruguay .

My semi-finalists would be Brazil, Argentina, Spain and Germany.

Dark horses: Belgium and Portugal.

Yes, heat will be an issue, and the teams who can keep possession of the ball will have an advantage.

England will have to play Brazil or Spain at the QF stage, so the odds are against them. I hope Sterling and Barkley get some time to shine..

People always underestimate and over estimate US. They have a good team and football is getting more and more popular in the states.

LOL - The U.S. teams coach just made headlines by virtually giving up before the World Cup even begins. That guy's so inspirational - NOT.

No European team has ever won a World Cup held in the Americas. That doesn't mean it can't be done, but Brazil and Argentina are both heavily favored, and they have the home turf advantage to boot. Some people are predicting a final match between Brazil and Argentina.

I'm personally rooting for the Latin American side, though it would be nice to some stunning upsets from African or Asian teams. Didn't some African country (Ghana?) take fourth place last time?

Well they are in a group of death with two tournament favorites, but it does not make their team bad.

I think you misrepresented what he said. I checked the news and he is right. They have to try to win Ghana and pray for luck in other games with much stronger opponents. Jürgen Klinsmann has won the World Cup himself, so he is no way defeatist.

P.S. I'm not rooting for US in this tournament.

Simon, good choices, and yep. the England team will be long gone..

You should have listened to what Carlos Alberto said about the Brazilian team. He essentially said, they were too in-experienced as a side, and picked Spain to win .
