Festival and Travel Planner 2026

Thanks everyone! You've turned lowlight into funny read, and I just couldn't stop laughing. Surely no one wants to compete with me for the most complete no's in a single event award, right?

Checked, too good
Checked, not good enough
Checked, not on2 but good on1
Checked, find you later
Checked, have to break/change
Checked, reputation to protect
Checked, just don't wanna dance with you
Seven NOs in one event over several nights? Are you keeping track somehow?

I don't remember from one night to the next at an event if I had rejections. Plus, if I had any I probably moved away and danced with someone else a few steps downfield.

Needless to mention WCS festivals with J&J don't have afternoon socials, there is just no time for it left.
They open up floor for social dancing between the J&J during afternoons and other times.
Yes, but there is nobody! I had read it before and then saw it with my own eyes at a big WCS festival: the room open but nobody there (I remember exactly two couples in a big hall). That's because everybody who appears at afternoon is there for the J'n'J, and they don't want to exhaust themselves before competition.
Except for the festival J&J participants, other Westies don’t bother about moving up the official “ranking”.
I never heard of J'n'J outside of festivals, they seem to be chained to festivals in EU. That makes sense as enough good dancers only meet at festivals. And actually the good dancers only come to a festival if there is J'n'J where they can make points.
While festival J&Js have an element of competition to it, it is hard to explain to salsa people that for Westies it is more fun than competition.
I can't say as I have not enough experience. But I would be surprised if everybody could handle well the case of never getting into finals.
The WCS festivals have social dancing starting at midnight till 7am in the morning for decades.
That's my problem, me preferring afternoon socials. So at the moment I go on thursdays and sundays to WCS festivals when socials start earlier (and evening tickets are available, not always the case). I would not like the same in salsa festivals.
My problem with Westies is their lack of taste in music and willingness to dance to any crappy music :)
Fortunately it is better than I thought in the beginning. In my first dance school the music was sometimes unbearable and I wondered if it was meant satirical. I also know a social where music is so bad I don't go there anymore. But in my current dance school and at festivals the music is better.

Of course not. But long way home so much time to reflect and replay, and amazed by all the boxes they could check. Don't bother me one bit.

It is easy to remember rejections. If talking about festivals, 95% of the time I get a dance with another follower. Rejections at festivals tend to be very small in number. Ten in a night across 6-8 hours of dancing is not much though I think my average has tended to be 3-4 a night. At festivals I rarely ask same follower twice in the same night (same as at socials). The more you ask, more likely you might come across a rejection. Also there is safe zone where you are unlikely to be rejected and risk zone where popular followers are.

Despite that I can recall most rejections at festivals from 9-10 years back :D it is not that I am trying to remember them. Once the topic gets triggered I can recall. But then I can recall a lot of trivial stuff from decades back which people find very strange and I find very natural.

J&Js are very common here at socials. Socials usually will also host J&J once every three or four socials. J&Js at some socials (not all) also allow you to earn points. I haven’t been to WCS much post covid. There used to be options for 3 to 4 socials every week. We do not have any WCS schools. So you get to dance with everyone. Different socials have different demographics and average levels.

For the people who went to the Amsterdam International Salsa Festival: are their day socials well attended? Not sure if they happened last year or if it's a new thing for AISF, it'll be the first time for me there, and I am an early bird, so I would prefer day ones to night - but only if there are enough people to dance with.

Besides that, any important insights about AISF that I should know before going there?

Live2Mambo party pass price for the 2nd weekend is now €250! Insaaaaaane.

And there are suddenly more passes available than there were 2weeks ago. 10+

Seems like the 1st weekend has taken up a good share of dancers and many people prefer the scheduling of the 1st weekend.

Most of the artists seem to be only there for the 1st weekend.

I was lately confused what "Budapest Salsa Open" means - now the tickets say it is for "cuban/LA" at the same location, same time, while for mambo you need the other ticket. How they want to separate these people? Back in my kindergarden days the catholic children went left entrance and the protestant children right entrance - so will it be like this? There is also a tango part at second week-end. The thing starts getting confusing and I wonder how that will work. Probably organizer has more rooms included than necessary in his rental price and now wonders how to fill them up.

Day socials taking place on Saturday & Sunday are a new thing this year.

No idea how it will all work. As long as all the salsa stars leave and don't stay next weekend, I'll be happy.

Short summary of Live2Mambo Budapest 2026: wonderful again as expected. As is my habitude I "only" went to the afternoon socials (five hours each, three days in a row).

To my surprise the afternoon music was very different to Back2Mambo: while the latter was dominated by salsa dura, this year Budapest was clearly dominated by romantica - I felt it was too much.

Many of these soft songs start without percussion in a flowy sound, as an example the first 33 seconds of "Contra la corriente" from Marc Anthony. These intros point out a problem: salseras have not learned what to do then, as it is unusual in classic salsa songs. Trying some bachata style intro moves mostly won't work as most salseras don't know it. I learned I better do some flowy moves alone and wait with partnerwork until the percussion sets in.

Dance level impressingly high as expected, especially sunday afternoon the other leads were nearly intimidating: the best of europe. I did not even try to ask the in-crowd followers, they always had too much very good friends around. But I had epic dances with new acquaintances. That said a few mediocre dances happened as well especially the first day.

Nothing to complain. For my taste these festivals are a bit too big, hard to find special dance partners again. But regarding dance quality unmatched.

To my surprise the last day the organizer posted they got trouble from the hotel management due to noise, smoking etc. Hopefully they can continue in this beautiful location next year.

I was disappointed in the music selection this year. Was too 'elevator'-y' for my tastes.

Surprising given the dh's reputation for playing more Dura and Charanga than the average festival.

Here I had a different experience. I felt there were more mediocre dancers than years past. But I also didn't dance very much so my sample size is skewed.

Afternoon socials were great.

I attended the first half of the Saturday night party and it was shockingly bad. With night parties, you can't go before 3-4am or else you won't catch the good dancers.

Acoustics were terrible. I don't remember it being this bad, maybe because the music was better in previous years so I didn't notice it as much.

You dance in close hold. Nothing fancy. If you lead all followers will follow. Don’t try sensual bachata moves. Less is more.

My second weekend at Live 2 Mambo in Budapest was a great experience overall. I loved the venue, the ambience, and the catering, and I had many really nice and playful dances with great connection and musicality, so exactly what I went there for. The afternoon socials were my highlight as well!
When it got very crowded and also at night it felt much more impersonal.

I never even saw you - shows how big the crowd is, although it doesn’t seem at first glance. But I had a nice dance with your musicality killers partner, only recognized while dancing with her.

I heard similar, nobody there before 1 am and a bunch of people still arriving at 4 am. This year I'm trying out Berlin Congress which finishes at 2 am, so what do these people then?
Point of clarification - is the feedback on Budapest for both weekends or a specific weekend?
2nd weekend, sorry I forgot to mention.
