Review Hamburg Salsa Marathon

Hamburg marathon is the last days of each year ending with NYE, which was a wednesday this year so marathon started on saturday: five days made it a real marathon, you needed to think about how to maintain your energy. I liked that there was a 2-3 hour break between afternoon social and night party. Me as an afternoon lover I concentrated on afternoon socials.

Recently there is an explosion of salsa festivals in Hamburg, so this marathon is not to be mistaken with the Salsa Weekend in july (2nd edition), the Dance Congress in october, the Big3 SBK in january (1st edition) and there seem to be even more. Being asked about Hamburg scene a local girl answered: "Well, at least we got lots of festivals now".

This was my first marathon after two years of going to bigger festivals and getting tired of anonymous huge crowds. With 200 dancers it wasn't exactly small and at the upper limit of my tastes, but it was a more cozy family atmosphere where I could get repeated dances with the followers I liked and also had some talks. I liked the overall atmosphere.

Dance level was mixed from high to beginner, lots of great followers and I also saw some great leads. That said I also ran into newbie beginner followers, so with time I got pickier. It was far from the overwhelming homogenity of fantastic dancers at dancehouse events, but still lots of great dancers.

Music to my surprise was similar to the big mambo festivals : mainly salsa dura with a few romanticas in between (the only marathon I had been before years ago had a much slower, jazzy, experimental sound).

Good were: both locations, the free beverages and finger food, aircon, gender ratio, dancefloor never too crowded.

Problematic was sometimes the sound in both locations. One very experienced follower agreed with me and pointed out that romanticas sounded well while older guaguancos often sounded bad. Indeed after that conversation I experienced the same: one time the sound was really bad at the place where I was dancing (add a bad follower so it were hard minutes for me), after that a romantica song came up and the sound was good at the same place. I'm no DJ but I faintly remember having read that digital files can have very different quality depending where you get them from, so that might be a reason.

Each afternoon social ended with one hour chacha-only, and to my surprise it worked well: dancefloor stayed rather full, and the vibe was astonishing and exciting. I never saw a chacha-only floor before, I loved the vibe, music was great. Contrary to that the chacha experiment at Live2Mambo Budapest did not work, there I saw an empty floor because it was at an early hour and it was a separated smaller floor. Zeid, the L2M organizer, was here in Hamburg and saw it working better, so maybe he'll think about a new chacha concept for L2M.

What kind of music did they play for the chacha section? More slow son or more "real" chacha?

I'm no expert so can't say but this here is a good example from it:

Eh, I'd take that. I'd say it's an NY style guajira-chá. It doesn't quite hit the energy level of classic chachachá but...

I'm asking because the other week a teacher I'd class as old school linear LA style teacher gave a chachachá workshop (on 2), and I enjoyed it so much more than the one I've had with a local mambo teacher that goes to those festivals you all go to. That one was playing all slow son montuno and guajira and honestly quite depressing overall.

Wow, would have gone for that in a heartbeat! Sure hope more hosts are inspired, and I catch one! Ljubljana, looking at you...

Sounds like Hamburg becoming good option. Added to planning!

Sorry, I don't remember whether you're a lead or a follow, but reports from fellow follows I heard on this event were far less favorable. More along the lines of "there were 3-5 good leads in the event" and it was extremely slippery. Not to rain on your parade, just adding some other perspective (I understand though with this being a second-hand experience it may be somewhat less valuable, but at least videos and especially stories I saw seem to confirm the overall not spectacular level of leads in the event).

Wow, as lead you just put icing on the cake!

I saw a few let's say not-so-good leads, but it called my attention that I saw good followers repeatedly running towards them and smilingly dancing with them, so I thought they must be friends or so. One guy had an especially weird style, but he got filmed so I could see later in insta he is an "instructor"... and his partner, a really good follower, danced with him for hours which made me wonder why the heck does she do this. So I hear now followers complained afterwards but on the dancefloor I saw them all smilingly dancing with those leads. I never said I understand this world.

Extremely slippery? On other events people powder as hell, and in both cases I never have problems with my Toms, so I wonder why people use shoes which are so problematic on many floors. It is a tango club, so floor can't be so bad.

Lots of videos from Hamburg here.

Prepare to have your ego boosted.
Lol clicked through to one dancer's profile, do you care to see your favorite dancers and DJs get physiotherapy?

I think I might even have an idea who you might be referring to  That's how bad it is, not only do we know the few good leads around, but also those who have the status but not necessarily the skills and better partners  But nobody said life as a follow in a highly follow-heavy scene was supposed to be easy, right?

I guess it's just part of the human condition to want to dance with your dance partner more often. I make the same conclusion when I see couples dancing. Many couples - whether professional, romantically linked, or both - will be dancing with each other more often. Some all the time. A few will rotate and dance with other people, but I find this behavior more of an exception.

In all casess, it has nothing to do with ability. Safety and familiarity rule.

Thinking of heading here next weekend in Hamburg. I dislike doing first time events but it is convenient in terms of flight and hotel? Any positive chatter around your scenes?

I heard some people going. Mind it's BSK (in this order!) and bachata has the biggest room (but also the other rooms are huge regarding the meters square). Afternoon social has parallel workshops so not sure if many people show up for social. Sunday it's a different location. I am blocked friday and do a lot of other festivals so finally decided not to go.

Well, I hear some chatter from some of the Hamburg people, for sure, but they're not entirely impartial because they somehow collaborate with the promoter, so there's that... With that being said, I plan on attending at least on Saturday, potentially Friday and/or Saturday as well. I am curious to see how this plays out because, frankly, if they use exactly the same rooms in the way they were used by the former Hamburg Salsa Congress, there's no way on earth a first-time event can be packed... But I'm happy to be proven wrong on this issue. It's convenient and fairly low-cost for me, and I haven't danced since Stuttgart at all, so would be silly not to give it a try. Feel free to reach out if you do end up going!

Snapshot: London MamboConSon Saturday Night

This is my pigeon hole view of a single session, not the whole weekend. Flew in Heathrow 7pm for layover, at Heathrow Radisson 9pm, ate and changed, danced till end at 4am, back to terminal for 7am fly-out. So not calling a review. Also no prior exposure to London social scenes or European congress circuits, so no depth nor breath to compare. Basically a virgin view, if you will.

Overall it was great, making it my best layover ever.

Level: lives up London as a top spot, so many great dances. Few learners and on1ers, but I have no problem switching to 1 so no issue there. Pretty much able to dance nonstop for the whole duration, thanks for everything below going my way.

Venue: the ballroom smaller than I thought it would be, but just right for the size, of 600+? Floor is great, so as the high ceiling, and sufficient cooling. A smaller room for Cuban Timba only sparingly attended, with at best a dozen couple dancing at once. Didn't see any sweaty back. And plenty of water to keep hydrated.

Ratio: definitely more women by the sides but not overly tilted. Just means for leads from lead heavy places like NYC, a refreshing change! Don't have to rush for next follow, can even be a little picky (read ego boost).

Music: my only disappointment, relatively speaking. Not bad in anyway and every song is danceable. But the range was pretty narrow, as didn't feel a change of dj at all. Don't recall change of pace like faster and slower songs, nor style of sounds like charanga or cha cha.
Also don't recall any tracks with great breaks to really play with the music. And definitely nothing that pulled me to dj and asked, what's this song, love it...

Hope some of you find this informative. After this my morning fly took me Zagreb, and was able to catch the Zagreb Sunday salsa social. Anyone wanna know about that?

That's hardcore :) I thought I'm extreme with taking night buses but social dance during an airport stopover is another league.

I have no idea what could have been in Zagreb last weekend, but always interested.

For those used to dancing in the USA regular (on2) socials, this has been an issue with the music at EU festivals.

However London does have two or three excellent DJs who play the type of the music you described.

I will be attending the parties, hoping there won't be an acute shortage of leads. Also I am excited to see the rooms at the convention center, which has been extensively renovated since the Hamburg Salsa Congress took place there. One advantage is the easily accessible location in the city center, right next to the train station.
