Festival and Travel Planner 2025

I think I need to prioritize places I haven't been in my travels. Not sure if others do this, but there are really only about 4 events I see myself repeating. The exceptions would be London and NYC because the dance scenes in those cities are worth visiting even without a big event.

Don’t Paris and Seoul have dance scenes that are worth visiting without a big event. Especially from what I hear everything about Seoul, for the studio trained secular dancers, it is probably better than NYC or anything other city.

On the west coast both SF and LA have good dance scenes.

Korea is on my list for sure, but I want to go when there is an event because I don't know people there. I wouldn't go to LA or SF just for salsa. I see most of those people if I attend the congress in SF. Just from talking to people I know from those places, I don't get the impression like the On2 scenes are that big. I know SF has IHeart and LA has the Unified On2 social. People from Paris tell me there isn't much other than O'Sullivan. They told me Agua is so so.

O'Sullivan is now twice a week (sunday and wednesday) - wednesday is new in another location. Two times a week a good social is not nothing. But Paris is not a latino city, so I would never expect it to have a broad salsa base.

I have gone to Agua several times or many times when I happened to be in Paris. I find dancing level to be so so. Other dancing events haven’t lined up when I have been in Paris. But the preparties in Paris before the congress have always been good 3 or 4 years that I was there.

I danced in London only once during a lay over. The music was good (as you know I have poor opinion of the music played across the pond). My London friends said that small venue consistently played good music and bigger events didn’t play same quality music. Dancing was better than Agua but a small place. So I have no opinion nor first hand knowledge of London scene.

Both SF and LA do have good on2 events other than you listed. I never danced in LA at a regular social. SF on2 scene is big. Not everyone comes out at the same time. There has been a lot of churn. Post Covid there has been less people in general showing up and less on2 events. Things seem to be picking up since last 7-8 months. The socials are more packed. More new faces. Yet when compared to many big cities it is good enough.

I haven’t danced in Seoul. But dancers and DJs from there visit often enough. And people from here have danced in Seoul. From second hand reports there are multiple dancing venues each night, you can dance 7 nights a week, dance level is very good and from what I hear music would be good too. Your question was places worth visiting when there is no event. I can’t think of any other city that comes close to Seoul for on2 dancers. NYC probably would be the next.

From my experience dancing in the cities without knowing anyone is fine. After the first time you go out, you get to know a few people. Or you can always get introduced to a few people via salsa network before you go. You can always find a few people who would know someone in Korea. Not that hard.

but it did and also a good level in general.

The Latino presence in the North American cities can’t be matched by any European city. California, Texas, NYC, and Florida have multi generational Latin population that make up very significant percentage of population. I think in California by now the Hispanics are the single largest ethnicity. Next largest is whites. But sometimes if you go to our on2 socials, you might feel you are in Asia.

There are some cities that have good salsa base but not regular local events. Like Moscow. At least that’s what locals in Moscow said about the lack of regular local events and the frequency. @Smejmoon will have better info on that part of the world.

I see pictures from 2mambo events quite regularly in Moscow and doesn't seem it has changed. They just had Mambolove festival last weekend. I'm quite sure Cuban salsa scene is much larger.

Paris I saw ads for 4 salsa porto events last weekend, but I can't vouch on quality. Sulli has always been hit and miss, sometimes nothing sometimes world's best. They added another day in the week, I would take it as a good sign.

I've been to agua this week (my first line salsa party) but they dance on1 I think. Another aspect that struck me is there were hardly any women older than 25 (which is not the case in my hometown) so I'm not worried about line salsa future in Paris.

OK, I didn't realize it's twice a week at different locations. In NYC or London, I'm probably at 3-4 socials a week.

What are the other good On2 weekly events in SF? I know Engles sometimes DJs at a couple of venues out there. Gabriel has a social also. I'd be interested to hear exactly what is going on in SF on a routine bases.

LA, I don't know much about other than Unified. I know Johnny Rumba does something out there as well but I don't know much about it. What are the other solid On2 venues in LA?

I haven't been to San Diego in years, but I remember they had a decent scene as well but don't know how big it is.

Yes, I know Leon teaches On1 and they also play bachata? Perhaps that helps bring in a younger crowd as well. Not my scene though.
