Favorite Singers

What are your favorite salsa singers?

In no particular order I love:

Andy Montañez, Mealo, Lavoe, Cheo Feliciano, Chivirico Davila, Justo Betancourt, El Conde. God, the list goes on and on...

So many. And it also changes by my mood. The one voice that's calming me down these days is Cheo Feliciano. I don't know why but there is something very comforting about his voice. Classic, quiet and rich. :)

Ismael Miranda still has the voice. Maelo could always deliver a song like a lion. Notice how we always recall the Fania singers when asked this question?

Who today can sing. Correction anyone can sing, but who can deliver 1st class?

Marc Anthony: Say what you will he has a powerful singing voice.

Ruben Blades: his voice always makes me want to dance.

Tony Vega: I need to hear more from him, but his vocals on "La Verdad" are amazing.

I love Cano Estremera - He used to sing for Bobby Valentin - Perhaps his most successful song; La Boda De Ella, and El Torro...

anyways, I have always like him, but a couple of days ago, for some reason I started to really pay attention to they way he sings. DARN!!! This boy can sing!!! I couldn't believe how pleasing to the ear he was... Absolutely great!

I went to see Marc Anthony live, even if I don't consider him a salsero any longer, I agree with Vin, that dude can sing his behind off!! I always wonder how he would have done back in the 70s...

It is. That's why he sounds great in bolero too.

The first name that comes to mind is Gilberto Santa Rosa... then Domingo Quiñoñes and Victor Manuelle.
... and Marc Anthony depending on one's criteria. The voice is there, no doubt, but the fact that he doesn't improvise causes a lot of arguments.

I agree with you and Boriken. I wonder if it's maybe the influence he's had? I think he has a strong love for Salsa BUT he has been heavily influenced by POP. Before he was a "salsa" singer per se, he did Club/Pop music and even a few appeared on in Salsa CDs. I have a feeling that he may have done well if he came up with Colon, Lavoe, Feliciano, etc. influences.

You know.... I really like Angel Canales. He's not Cheo, Lavoe or Blades but his voice is just interesting to me.

Ibrahim Ferrer's voice was just crystally beautiful.

Others:

Hector Lavoe
Ruben Blades
[Camilo] Azuquita
Angel Canales
Vitin Aviles [who I just recently discovered, and who actually reminds me a bit of Cheo Feliciano]
Frankie Ruiz
Joe Arroyo
Gilberto Santa Rosa
Victor Manuelle

Probably a bunch of Colombians I don't know by name. Grupo Niche, Fruko y Sus Tesos, and Sonora Carruseles (and maybe some others) generally have really good vocalists as well, but I don't know them by name.

I hate that this guy isnt a hardcore salsa singer, but I'm in a huge mark Anthony phase right now and its good to see some others are there with me. sometimes its hard to know alot about the music when you dont speak the language

I adore Marc Anthony's music! It's hard being a little white girl who doesn't know any Spanish...the words in most songs ususally remain a mystery to me. It would be nice to know the mood of the song, so you could dance and style accordingly. Spanish is so beautiful! I wish I had taken Spanish in high school instead of French...it sure would be helpful now.

Some:

Cuco Valoy, Santiago Cerón, Monguito, Israel Kantor, Chivirico Dávila, Vitín Avilés, Ismael Rivera, Yayo "el Indio", Adalberto Santiago, Nelson Pinedo, Alexis Murillo, Angel Silva "Melón"
